This is fascinating, the Computer Devices' DOT, the a portable that was the first computer to ship with Sony 3.5-inch disk drives and it had a *widescreen* CRT display (which supported 132x25 textmode!).
And the video ... has some surprises...
Well worth a watch.
So if you ever wondered how OpenBSD 7.7 (most recent one at the time of writing) works on 23-year old PC, I have recorded a boot process.
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (single-core 1.6 Ghz) from 2002. i386, of course
RAM: 512 Mb DDR2
HDD: Some Western Digital 80Gb hard drive from ~2004
Fresh OpenBSD installation without any tweaks and tuning boots in 88 seconds.
There's definitely a room for improvement such as turning off libraries reordering (we should't worry about security too much on such machine). Less then a minute is easily possible.
But still, results are amazing, I think. It's a 23-year old PC! And it runs the most recent OS without any trouble. Try to do that with Windows 11 or any mainstream Linux distro.
Also, #FVWM is pretty snappy and works just fine.
Currently reading up on the whole "memory situation" in #DOS
EMS/XMS/HMA/UMA/UMB
Its one big acronym salad.
There is no reason to believe that the original title of this game was "Uncle Clive" or that the cover depicts an angry, jealous Sir Clive Sinclair smashing a BBC Microcomputer with his fist. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.
Welcome to 1976. Those were the days!

Amiga CD32 discs have interesting layout: first - data track, then - audio tracks, like this (captured with cdrdao
):
Track Mode Flags Start Length
------------------------------------------------------------
1 DATA 4 00:00:00( 0) 03:12:44( 14444)
2 AUDIO 0 03:12:44( 14444) 02:45:05( 12380)
3 AUDIO 0 05:57:49( 26824) 10:15:33( 46158)
4 AUDIO 0 16:13:07( 72982) 03:02:22( 13672)
...
23 AUDIO 0 52:15:27(235152) 01:52:47( 8447)
Leadout AUDIO 0 54:07:74(243599)
Wondering is it always so? I only have several
game and demo discs to explore
I am looking for an Amiga 2000 CPU accelerator that features a physical enable/disable switch.
Anyone have one sitting around they're looking to sell? I'm using a 68020 accelerator now, so anything would be faster.
This new Mario game for the Atari 5200 looks amazing.
That's not a typo.

Happy International Amiga Day!
(It's father of the Amiga, Jay Miner's birthday, which some observe as such.)
Here's a gem that I just found on the Internet Archive. It's a catalogue for the JOHN SANDS SEGA home computer system, from around 1984: https://archive.org/details/John_Sands_Sega_Home_Computers_1984_John_Sands_Electronics_AU/mode/1up

This is a very satisfying video showing the repair and revitalization process done on this vintage 40+ year old 9-inch CRT display.
"The CRT with a SECRET; Restoring a tiny 1980s monitor…"
I recall a floppy disk brand from the early '80s called "Verbrum." It was an offshoot of Verbatim, I am nearly certain. I cannot find any evidence that this existed in web searches.
Does anyone else remember this brand / sub brand?
Happy 5.25 inch floppy disk day!
Ok, I spent yesterday afternoon trying to get #RAID configured on my #lenovo #ThinkPad #P70 - to no success.
I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyCC1NGe8a8&t=36s of the similar #p50 and configuring #RAID which shows the #BIOS interface but my P70's only show the "non-raid physical discs" I do not have an option for RAID volumes. Note I have upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version on lenovo's web site. Any thoughts?
I have attached 2 #screenshots of what the BIOS displays - I'm trying to configure the RAID on the two 512GB #NVMe sticks.

Update: Added to my silly Retro Corner http://retro.rubenerd.com/c116.htm
I took a few pictures more of the recently acquired Mac Plus. Personal trivia: a second hand Mac Plus was the first computer I bought with my own money. #macplus #macintosh #apple #retrocomputers
Ehh... since new people are joining, I might as well update my old intro. Thankfully, my instance allows for a higher word count on posts!
I am Sinclair-Speccy, your resident computer nerd. I go by Sinclair, Speccy, Sinco, Altair, or even Alphonse. My primary interests are #RetroComputing, #OldTech, and #OStan. You’ll usually find me boosting retro tech content and occasionally posting it myself, mostly retro tech ads. I’m fascinated by vintage mainframes like the IBM 704, CDC 6500, and Whirlwind I as well as microcomputers such as the Altair 8800 and MK14, but I am not old enough to have ever used them in person.
I’ve moved around a bit online as I started on .art, then bitbang.social and now oldbytes.space. When not geeking out over computers I enjoy experimenting with older operating systems using emulators like 86Box, VirtualBox, Bochs, and QEMU or playing games such as the Sims 4, Sims 3, Arma 3 and Universe Sandbox. My interest in emulation all started when I managed to run Yggdrasil Linux from the '90s!
I also do 3D rendering in Bryce 3D which I mainly post on my account for my website (https://sakurajima.moe/@themainframe) which also hosts content on my 3 worldbuilding settings and I share some of my work on DeviantArt. One of my favourite niche fandoms is OS-tans which is turning operating systems and hardware into anime characters. I even have my own OS-tan universe that is hosted on my site.
Musically I vibe with #vaporwave, #synthwave, #darksynth,#phonk, and experimental music. Some favorite artists include Windows96, Dynatron, Carpenter Brut, KSLV Noh, and Frums.
As for some other stuff I enjoy #mythology, #transformers, #cats, #fantasy, #nature such as #flowers and #plants and #animals, #steampunk, a bit of #classicalmusic, #starwars, #photography, #art, #space, #cyberpunk and #scifi but you’re more likely to find that content on my other account.
You can check out my website here: https://sinclair-speccy.github.io/The-Mainframe/index.html and I hope to expand it into a tech journalism platform someday, though motivation and its static nature kind of stop me...
@futurebird Here's an example from a TV show in Australia called Beyond 2000: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fusNN_v2cw8
