I took the first full backup of my root partition (which contains my home directory) that I've taken in years yesterday, and less than 24 hours later my NVMe suddenly died with zero explanation.
It's not even recognized by the BIOS any more, and putting it in a caddy doesn't help.

Bullet *VERY* narrowly dodged.

Talking with the folks in the local #vintage / #retrocomputing community, they clued me in that the #ThinkPad #RAID is a steaming pile of 💩 and not worth the trouble.

🤷 Oh well. Thanks for cluing me in

So I swapped out the two testing #NVMe drives I was using and reinstalled the original sticks - to have #windoz10 demanding for the #bitlocker recovery key. 🤦‍♂️

Well, time to wipe & install #windoz11 then.

Install went fine, only 4 rando #drivers to find for all #devices to be recognized and working.

Using my #CTT scripts to install the majority of applications, then to remove the #spyware #bloatware and other garbage #micro$oft added to #windows11

Then migrate my #data from my other ThinkPad. Welcome to my #sunday #funday

From a different point of views and the fact that one can host a Server on any machine.

Components or machines should avoid as many parts as possible from big tech Bros. That means all for recommendations before should be ignored.
AMD instead of Intel and Nvidia is more compatible with Linux as it supports it.

I'll keep my current stuff as it does not make sense to throw functional parts away, but I'll consider this on next sets.

What do you think?

BTW - if anyone of you has a recommendation for a 19" mini rack server (shorter mounting depth) I'd love to hear about them.

I'd like to try #proxmox for the typical services #homeassistant #nextcloud #paperlessngx #adblocker #vpn etc

Ideally #ssd or #nvme in a #raid plus separate disks for storage (also raid). IOMMU

Doesn't have to be the newest version. A slightly older and used one is also fine.

#boost welcome - thanks a lot!

I know it's a first world problem, but what should I do with NVMe drives of 500GB capacity that I've replaced as part of a server upgrade?

Doing 1TB in a RAID0 for backup doesn't make sense (too small, and I already have an on site backup solution).

Donating is my default, but I'd rather repurpose... but for what purpose?

Starting a thread about #peepr my peephole thingamabob! So I can post updates here for it.

Here is the first draft of the cylinder that will connect to the dome (on the wider side there). Camera dome will be held by two screws and will be secured against people turning it from the outside.

To the small end of the cylinder the inside "box" will connect and in it will be the computer and monitor.

I will order some cables and a new #Raspberry camera to test how the commonly available parts of the #RPI ecosystem will fit into this project.
Might use a lower memory Raspberry Pi 5 for this and have a #NVME hat on it for added storage for video recording, but I'm not sure about that yet.

I am just drawing out my ideas, the measurements are not the actual ones I will use for my own door when it comes to it.

Interesting. Not ideal, but I have a few USB NVMe enclosures that I use in my home lab. Very unreliable. Well, USB is not the most reliable connection. Anyway, I did some reading and someone said to format NVMe as EXT2 not EXT4 (or ZFS or XFS) as EXT2 does not journal and is easier on flash memory. I formatted the NVMe/USB frankenstein as EXT2 and it has been very reliable. How about that?

I just hate debugging hardware issues. Thought the motherboard was busted (wasn't able to reboot, only cold boot), found a lot of info the board in particular does that, it's also six years old, so I bought a new one.

Still the same issue.

It was the NVMe drive all along. Somehow, after soft reboot, it stuck the whole machine.

Replaced the drive, it's working like a charm. Well, at least new motherboard has better and more I/O ports...
