This is a commission I'm working on. It's a very architectural subject matter and that's why it has lots of pencil on the first layer. I'll be erasing these marks down to half tone and then going in with the watercolor. I usually don't do such line specific stuff but this had to be sketched out underneath. #art #sketch #architecture #artist
A recent illness led me on some feverish searches in my images-folder.
The Grand Vizier Crossing the Atmeydanı (Horse Square), Jean Baptiste Vanmour, 1720 - 1737
The Atmeydanı was Istanbul’s large, central square. Two obelisks recall the fact that the area had been a hippodrome in ancient times. The grand vizier, on horse-back at lower right centre, is accompanied by soldiers and preceded by two servants. They carry a prayer rug and a cushion in case he is called to prayer while en route.

Playing with one of my inks from Canada, while drawing a comforting floral pattern, for today's #inkyDays drawing. I keep coming back to comfort, and not much pushing my creativity to find new patterns. But I do push myself to keep creating art. Both for my own joy and in defiance of those who want to squash us all.
During our last trip to Cilento, we stopped in Bosco, a town that hosted the surrealist artist José Garcia Ortega, who was exiled during the Franco dictatorship. In 1976, he created ten lithographs titled "Decalogue for Spanish Democracy", ten posters in which he depicted the fundamental values that should underpin democracy.
At the #IARC2025, Philip McCulloch-Downs will explore how protest art can serve as a powerful act of solidarity and a tool for challenging oppressive narratives about non-human animals.
