Fahrradpendler Nach einem Jahr habe ich nun endgültig Tschüss zu #Windows gesagt und habe das mit dem #dualboot korrigiert.
Ich fühl' mich wohl im neuen #linuxmint!

soeben auf einem Acer-Gerät älter als 10 Jahre den Versuch unternommen, Ubuntu 24.04 im Dualboot mit Win10 (Updates aktuell) zu installieren. Installation lief ohne Fehlermeldung durch. Nach dem obligatorischen Neustart des Systems erscheint aber kein Grub! Nix. Windows startet gleich durch. Im UEFI nachgesehen: Kein Grub im Bootmenü eingetragen. Woran hängt es? Spontane Ideen? Das Gerät hatte ich gerade eben im #ManiabelMontag in Arbeit, ist also nicht meins und nicht mehr verfügbar. Dennoch möchte ich eine Lösung finden.

All electronics go dark, and I have to resort to pre-digital-era distractions until the power’s back. No big deal. Some time passes and the power is finally restored. Back in my comfy seat, ready to pick up my digital wandering where it got interrupted, I press the power button and eagerly wait. Few seconds later, I’m greeted with an unfamiliar boot menu. It definitely isn’t Grub, to my surprise. It’s the Windows bootloader1… How? Why? Where did my beloved Arch installation go? And just like that, down the rabbit hole I dove in pursuit of a plausible explanation for this mystery. But before I take you down with me through this tortuous investigation, I think I need to lay down some foundational context first.

Solution is simple - just run the following command in your Linux terminal:
sudo timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 --adjust-system-clock

Das Knowhow hierfür hätten/haben m. E. nur die #Hardwarehersteller heutzutage.
#DualBoot scheint bei manchen Systemen zu gravierenden Konflikten zu führen, so meine Kurzrecherche damals. War mir zu riskant.

I FINALLY INSTALLED LINUX LAST NIGHT!!! I chose #LinuxMint!
I am dual booting with Windows 10 and so far I haven't had any issues. It even detected my printers without me even asking it to! I am so happy I finally bit the Linux bullet! Any advice is appreciated!
I plan to dual boot my Windows 11 laptop with some flavor of Linux to avoid integration and support of AI. I have used Ubuntu in the past. My preference is one that doesn't require high level of geekdom to use.
Could anyone offer suggestions and insights on which flavor to use?

My #AudioInterface appears to have made its final #BonkWave offering as it won't hold sample rate any more. What am I to consider for my next option for #ElectronicMusic production under #Windows with an eye towards moving to #Linux (or #DualBoot )? I use #Bitwig #VCVRack and less often #Reason. I'd like 4-6 I/O 24-bit 48kHz is fine. I am looking at the MOTU M4 as I have used the same brand (and interface) for my own #music for more than 25 years.

Przy okazji prac z tym laptopem wyszła niezbyt fortunna zmiana w ostatnim #Ubuntu 24: wyłączono detekcję innych systemów operacyjnych zainstalowanych na komputerze oraz dodawanie ich automagicznie do #grub-a. Konsekwencją tego jest niewyświetlanie grub-a wcale, bo po co, jeśli mamy tylko 1 zainstalowany os - Ubuntu właśnie.
Oczywiście można łatwo to zmienić odpalając terminal, ale dla osób, dla których tworzy się Ubuntu, gdzie terminal jest "schowany", to może być problem i niepotrzebne zamieszanie.
Przez lata działało automatycznie, teraz przestało :/
Jak sobie poradzić?
Edytując plik konfiguracyjny gruba:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
1 zmiana: wyłączenie ukrycia grub-a przez zakomentowanie # opcji hidden i ustawienie timeout
#GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=3
po zapisie pliku pamiętamy o:
sudo update-grub
teraz odpalamy:
sudo os-prober
Po restarcie inne systemy powinny się pojawić w menu grub-a wyświetlanym przez 3 sekundy.
Ta opcja nie włącza automatycznej detekcji, a robi to jednorazowo.
Dla osób korzystających z dual-boot z #Windows to bardzo ważne :)
Linux experts- is dual boot Windows/Linux relatively painless? I can’t remember if I heard a month or so ago that a windows update rendered it janky and unusable.
This is just based off the latest Windows Recall stuff, I’d really like to make an effort to move to Linux now (yes I’m aware that even as a Linux user you can’t fully escape it)

Auch wenn #Microsoft aus Eigeninteresse etwas anderes behauptet: Alle gängigen Computer, die jünger als ca. 10 Jahre sind, sind schnell genug als Arbeitstier für alltägliche Aufgaben wie das Surfen im Internet oder Videokonferenzen. Und etwas anderes findet ja auch auf den meisten Bürocomputern nicht statt – neue Software läuft meist (auch) im Webbrowser.
Wenn ein betagter Computer täglich viele Stunden läuft, kann es sinnvoll sein, ihn durch einen stromsparenderen zu ersetzen.
Wenn MS sich weigert, #Windows11 auf einem Computer laufen zu lassen, auf dem #Windows10 läuft, ist das kein Grund, die Hardware zu ersetzen, aber ein guter Grund, zu #Linux zu wechseln.

Bei der @datenfreude überlegen wir, eine #LinuxInstallParty in #Bielefeld zu veranstalten. Also ein Treffen z.B. in den @acmelabs, bei dem Leute ihre Laptops mitbringen können und dann mit unserer Hilfe ein GNU/Linux darauf installieren. Gäbe es daran Interesse?
UPDATE: #Datenfreude heißt inzwischen @Datenpunks, und wir haben uns heute darauf festgelegt, am 7. Dezember in den Räumen der @acmelabs eine LinuxInstallParty zu veranstalten. Wir bereiten bootbare USB-Sticks vor, auf denen verschiedene Linux-Distributionen zum unverbindlichen Ausprobieren bereitstehen. Wenn euch eine gefällt, könnt ihr sie direkt installieren. Falls ihr schon Windows auf eurem Computer habt, kann das draufbleiben (#dualBoot) oder ersetzt werden. Am besten macht ihr in dann vorher ein Backup.
