Dave F<p>Since I have found that installing <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> has become easier and easier the last few years, I decided to conduct an experiment. I gave my 10 year old daughter a usb stick and had her install it on a Dell laptop from 2011. <br>I recorded the whole thing (recorded her on my phone while a capture card recorded her screen). And for the most part, it went well. There was an issue about the correct time zone - which I believe is either due to the collapse of the US educational system or even more likely her mother's fault. 😃 Unfortunately, after installing Linux Mint all the way. She wasn't able to get the wireless card working. In her defense, I couldn't either until I connected a cat5 cable and downloaded the drivers.<br>The thing is: I was able to connect to the wireless router when I booted to the live distro. The drivers had to have been on the stick! Why didn't they install?<br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/linuxmint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmint</span></a> <br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/endof10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>endof10</span></a> <br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Dell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Dell</span></a><br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/oldcomputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>oldcomputers</span></a></p>

DORO<p>I replaced Linux Mint with elementary OS, and I’m very happy with it. Mint is not bad, but it’s not exactly what I was looking for. I’m sure elementary is it. Eugenia L<p>Battle for Wesnoth is probably the most advanced open source game to date. If you're into turn-based strategy games, definitely download it for your distro. And they're looking for more maintainers btw!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linuxmint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmint</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mint</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opensource</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/foss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>foss</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/game" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>game</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/games" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>games</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/strategy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>strategy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/turnbased" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>turnbased</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/wesnoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wesnoth</span></a></p>
Eugenia L<p>Finally managed to properly install Caesar III under <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>, to run under the open source re-implementation of the gaming engine, <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Augustus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Augustus</span></a>. It wasn't as straightforward under Linux due to case sensitivity on files, and a special tool to unarchive shielded .cab files, but it worked at the end thanks to the wiki. Bear in mind, the game requires the original artwork from 1998 (easily found online).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opensource</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/foss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>foss</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/game" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>game</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/games" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>games</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/strategy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>strategy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/caesariii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caesariii</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linuxmint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmint</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mint</span></a></p>
