Everyone and their dog seem to be selling this 50x50 heat sink extrusion, but there are no 3D models and dimensions around?

Okay let's undistort a web image, draw a sketch in #FreeCAD, mirror the part and.. oh, oh no

Continued thread

For anyone who has no idea what I'm talking about but is interested anyway, almost 3 years ago I starting trying to design from scratch 3D printed model rockets to carry a small video camera and altitude logger while remaining as small and light a possible.

I spent quite a bit of time fiddling around in FreeCAD and OpenRocket and 3D printing prototype parts trying to come up with something that could carry the payload while being both light enough to fly well and tough enough to survive the flight. Eventually this resulted in a series of lights in late 2022, and here are the results: youtube.com/watch?v=s4I2bufpGQc

@Sektorenkoppler bin dabei...

KLAXXON! #SOURCE issue 2 is now available for download! In case you don't know what I am on about SOURCE is my attempt at an #opensource "pay what you feel" magazine. In this issue we look at #Godot, #Inkscape, #OpenStreetMap #Logseq #Termux and #Syncthing

There's a little more info and a direct to pdf link on my blog as well as links to Issue 1 which was a deep dive on Computational Fluid Dynamics with #FreeCAD.

[thread for a little hobby project] 🧵 🚂

Couple days ago @jon stumbled upon a pair of truly amazing maintenance trains (gruene.social/@jon/11485169445). They're basically sheds on wheels.

I decided to construct some 1:87 / H0 scale versions. The models won't be 1:1 copies but instead "inspired copies" (if alone as it'll be difficult to get down the utter dorkiness of the real things).

First model will be the boxed trailer. After that I'll work on the crew carrier.

Replied to FreeCAD

A bit late for #FreeCADFriday but I enjoyed laying out some parts for a #scouting project and then constructing a case around them. It's to be handheld so I chose to put the battery in the handle since it seemed to be a ideal place, with the USB-C charging port on the bottom. @FreeCAD #FreeCAD
Maybe I should consider making a video showing the workflow of this sort of case design 🤔

FreeCAD at FAB25
Between July 4th and 11th split between Brno and Prague, FAB25, the latest iteration of the annual Fab Lab travelling conference, took place. Excellently we had representation from the FreeCAD community speaking at the event.

I was reading the manifold GitHub page and I saw that the STL format loses topology and can make a properly manifold mesh non-manifold.

The suggestion is to use 3MF.

Is there any reason not to use 3MF when sharing files? Are there any slicers that can’t ingest 3MF at this point?

Nice little low-key arvo distraction... knocked this design up in #FreeCAD pretty quickly, first prototype print done... probably needs some minor improvements but feels like it is going to do the intended job.

This is an #allotment print! The purpose is to top a cane which will be inserted next to the centre of things like tomatillo and chilli plants and allow strings to be run down to support branches. We find that tomatillos are especially problematic for the weight of their fruit causing branches to snap off.

Now off to the allotment test it out in practice!
