I've made 10,000 posts on Mastodon since I joined just under two years ago.

Thanks and thoughts:

- I'm grateful to @admin for running this instance. I made a small contribution to the running costs, and you should do the same.

- Thank you to all who follow and interact with me.

- Thank you to the people I follow for providing so much thought provoking, entertaining, informative, and beautiful content.

- I wish more of the academics and journalists I followed on Xitter had migrated to Mastodon.

- There are times when I feel I am just talking to myself here.

- There are many topics on which I have opinions but which I do not discuss here, either because I am not sufficiently well informed to make a constructive contribution to a discussion, or because for some topics I do not think Mastodon is an appropriate forum for their discussion.

- Partly on account of its current rotten government and the appalling way in which it is currently waging war, Israel is an unpopular country on Mastodon, or at least in the parts of Mastodon that I see. Nevertheless and regardless of how many people here take offence, I will continue to defend the right of Israel to exist. A two state solution, Israel and Palestine recognized as two states living alongside each other, is not utopian and is the only way to ensure peace and dignity for all.

- I use hashtags and so should you!

Planned to add file name descriptions and #tags to my recent photos while taking a train ride.

Unfortunately, tab-completion of my Python-based #tagging tool doesn't work at the moment and I have no idea why. This makes my tagging session an unpleasant one.

So I created a bug report for it: github.com/novoid/filetags/iss

The only thing that worries me is that it's my own tool, that has this bug and I don't know how to fix it. 😔 🤦‍♂️

Could be related to #readline, terminal emulator, pyreadline version, ... 🤷

I've been tracking the impact of #Trump actions on US research, primarily in this Mastodon thread. But the thread is becoming long and unwieldy, and this problem will only get worse.

I'll continue to track this news but I want to stop doing it primarily in threads. Once I depend less on threads, I'll depend more on #tags to help readers find the posts in this collection.

I already use #DefendResearch and will to continue to do so.

It comes from the Declaration To Defend Research Against US Government Censorship.
defendresearch.org/

But I want to supplement it with a more Trump-specific tag. After mulling over a few possibilities — like TrumpAdminOnResearch and ResearchUnderTrump — I've decided to go with #TrumpVResearch.

Thanks to Alice Meadows and Suze Kundu for the suggestion.
scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/20

I won't add this tag retroactively to (many) past posts. But going forward I'll use both #DefendResearch and #TrumpVResearch for posts in this collection.

To follow these topics, consider following these tags.

I encourage others to use these tags too, in posts on the same topics. It's one way to #crowdsource this tracking project.

Here's more on this tracking project and the need to crowdsource it.

so did i get this right:?
the main thingy is mastodon
the protocols are open
there is more (like friendica, diaspora, ...?)
my instances server fetches all that stuff from all the other instances (over time)?
so can mastodon users see my screaming into the void (i understand @endless screaming now)?
or can i just see their posts and interact with them, as my instance crawls anything available?
are there cutoffs / limits / if not shown after timeout never seen?
is there a way to get back to the post i tried to comment on which disapeas after i am finished typing (as coming from facebook i alsways type in an external editor, then paste, not to provide biometric typing data)...
aaand: i create my bubble over time by using #tags? or by the tags defined in my profile? or both? or is there anyhow some kind of algorithm filtering and selecting what to show (feels mind blowingly open but somehow lonely the same time)?
do i need followers or friends for it "to be like at ..."?
will somepwny even read or answer this?

@ellane

yes, i’m frequently stumbling about old notes, for example when searching for keywords - specifically as I have imported 4000+ notes from Evernote into #Obsidian in the end of 2023.

I like #tags & have always used them a lot

and yes, I also have a folder system & a taxonomy, which I use ca. 75% similar on my desktop and in mail…

My images have no alt-text because it's pointless on those pics. They're AI generated, meaning they aren't real, just depicting reality and meant to be seen and interpreted with your eyes connected to your brain working autonomously, without any extra guidance. If your sight is that bad or you're blind entirely, you wouldn't get much value from most descriptive alt-text I could come up with because it still would miss important details. As for CW-tagged pics, #tags usually hint what to expect.

@vae
after many apps & many trials, I accepted how MY brain works: half chaotic & organized

so this is my #Obsidian vault setup:

folders for areas of my life with sub folders , but I avoid too much details

- one major “Inbox” (folder) for each new note and one “collect” folder for notes I am not sure yet, where they belong

- otherwise I mostly use search & #tags

- notes, I use daily, I usually keep open (e.g.: my Journals)

- and ! one main folder for ALL media files

I don't need CW; I'm finding filters sufficient.

It's a tough question. I strongly agree that engaging with the world we find ourselves in is our shared responsibility.

And yet: offensiveness is subjective. Why is it *obviously* appropriate to CW sex and violence, topics that not everyone wants or needs a warning for?

There's a difference between offense and damage. Framing the question as preferences, or what might offend, makes it easier to ignore the people who say lack of CW harms them. Just as framing masking as a courtesy makes it easier to ignore the folks who say your exhalations might kill them.

When someone says "I need X to protect myself," a reply that sounds like "Y is perfectly adequate.. you shouldn't need X," strikes me as all kinds of wrong. It smacks of "Well, why don't you just.."

I expect I'll be inconsistent about my use of CW vs. tags. But I'm not going to be offended by being asked (either generally or directly) to put some stuff behind CWs.
