Dignity

The statue is located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. The stainless steel, 50-foot-tall statue was designed by sculptor Dale Lamphere to honor the cultures of the Lakota and Dakota people. In his own words:

"Dignity represents the courage, perseverance and wisdom of the Lakota and Dakota culture in South Dakota. My hope is that the sculpture might serve as a symbol of respect and promise for the future."

…But the #BlackHills have long been the subject of disputes between #SouthDakota & its tribes. The 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie recognized that the Black Hills belong to the #Sioux people, but the US government seized the #land less than a decade later to mine for gold. A 1980 #SCOTUS decision found that the US violated the treaty, but the tribes refused the $1.3B in compensation they were offered & maintained their rights to the land.
