Oh wow! When we started with // foss.events some years ago and we needed a #logo, we simply put a calendar icon that shows a star.

It was easy to create, solved the problem for the moment, we could put "find a new logo" into the backlog and concentrate on other things.

Meanwhile, if you look for an "#event" #icon on flaticon, it looks like our logo became iconic and you get multiple proposals, based on our basic design idea back then.

Well ... thank you for forking and keep #FOSS-ing 🌻

🌍 Experience the Hamburg node at the WCRP Global KM-Scale Hackathon 2025 🎥

🗓️ In May, over 600 scientists and researchers joined forces across 10 global locations to take part in the first-ever global climate modelling #hackathon, organized by the World Climate Research Programme and supported by initiatives like WarmWorld, EERIE I European Eddy-Rich Earth System Models, Destination Earth, ESMO, and #nextGEMS.

🇩🇪 One of the largest nodes was hosted by the @MPI_Meteo in Hamburg📍 , where more than 120 participants from around the world came together. They spent a week collaborating with local science teams, exploring cutting-edge research, and working with data from the latest
#ICON and #IFS–FESOM model runs.

🌐 From Europe to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Americas, this was a truly global effort to advance kilometer-scale #ClimateModelling.

🎬 Curious to see what it was like? We’ve captured the energy and collaboration of the Hamburg node in a short video. Come take a look!

What is wrong with my approach to attract icon designers to the project? There was some activity and also some drafts. But none of them came to an end.

I might misunderstand how designers work and what they do expect?

EDIT: I re-worked the issue based on some comments. I also stated clearly that it is an unpaid voluntary work.

🚨 Video alert! Our latest multimedia piece is out and we are excited to share it with you ▶️

🔎 What is this video about?: The visualizations in this video provide a colorful and creative representation of our modelling endeavors. Additionally, the captivating images demonstrate the playful fluctuations of various components of our Earth system, including clouds, aerosols, thermal radiation, and temperature, over the course of the present and future years — specifically between 2021 and 2030.

📽️ Video creation: This illustrative work has been produced with the Earth System models used by #nextGEMS: ICON and IFS-FESOM. #ICON is a model was developed by the @MPI_Meteo and the German Climate Computing Center, while hashtag#IFS-FESOM developed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

A favorite of mine, Windy.com -- which has had significant upgrades!

"In 2021, two new #ICON forecast models were integrated - ICON-D2 with local coverage for central and west #Europe and ICON Global. Thousands of new air quality stations monitoring primary pollutants worldwide were added from our partners #OpenAQ and #PurpleAir to fight #AirInequality.

"Several new layers were launched - Tidal currents featuring high-resolution data; the Sea currents dataset was updated; Thermals layer with soaring forecast for glider and paraglider pilots; Drought monitoring layers - Soil moisture, Moisture anomaly, and #Drought intensity, monitoring global drought.

"We also expanded into the wear OS category and introduced Windy Apple Watch App. The 3D Globe mode was brought back for most layers (desktop only), including the Hurricane Tracker.

"In 2022, we launched several new features and improved existing ones. In the beginning of the year, we added a new #radioactivity set of stations as a POI overlay and partnered with SaveEcoBot, run by a non-profit organisation SaveDnipro, and obtained a broad spectrum of environmental data sources in #Ukraine and offer them in an easy-to-access way to our users and other affected communities for free.
New local models HRRR for the US and ACCESS model for Australia were added, along with a set of layers wet-bulb temperature, UV Index and Solar power.
With release of iOS16, the Windy.com iOS app got LockScreen widgets, which can be placed on the phones's locked screen. A new significant iOS feature.

"For the #HurricaneSeason, we launched redesigned and upgraded our Hurricane Tracker and added multimodel forecast & LIVE satellite visualization. Users in the US could also appreciate an improved radar resolution and coverage."

Weather forecasting and climate modeling move closer together

However, current research questions, such as those concerning the regional impacts of anthropogenic #ClimateChange, require that the gap between #weather #forecasting and #climate modeling be gradually closed. This is made possible by modern #supercomputers, which can calculate longer time periods with high spatial resolution.

A team of researchers from the #MPI-M, the #DWD, and other partners has taken on this task and is bringing together what belongs together: the #ICON developments for numerical weather prediction and climate applications.

"Our project has benefited greatly from the fact that the components use the same model structure," says Wolfgang Müller, group leader at MPI-M and lead author of the recently published paper presenting first successes of the project.

Roland Potthast, head of the Department of Meteorological Analysis and Modeling at the DWD, highlights the societal relevance of the work: "The developments help us to take an integrated approach to weather and climate and to provide well-coordinated services ranging from high-resolution weather #forecasts to seasonal and decadal climate forecasts."

🌦️🌍🌊 Bringing together what belongs together ✅
🌐 Models for weather+climate have been developed largely separately from one another, because of different requirements of the 2 applications. A team of researchers from #MPIM, @DeutscherWetterdienst & other partners is now bringing the #ICON developments for numerical weather prediction & climate applications closer together.

Earlier this year, I had the occasion to design a new logo for the video sharing app @loops 😊

Turning the play symbol into a Möbius strip-like design reintroduces the notion of “loop” into the icon. I also created several animated versions, playing with the infinite construction of the design, for various uses such as loading screens and video idents.

Thanks @dansup for your trust! You can go try the app here: loops.video
