How-To Geek · Fossify Brings Free and Open-Source Utilities to Your Android PhoneThe project is a continuation of the former Simple Mobile Tools suite.

Samsung, I do not recall consenting to you having a copy of every photo I took with my phone. This picture has long since been moved off of my device and onto other storage (thanks #SyncThing), and yet, here it is on my phone again.

I even thought I had disabled the default gallery app entirely, in favour of Fossify Gallery. But still your own app is running and sending me notifications --- of my late family dog, no less.

Fucking gross. Ew.

I got tired of random updates breaking my layout — so I rebuilt my phone setup from the ground up with FOSS tools I actually trust. All open, all mine. 💜

Continued thread

Yesterday I swapped out all the Simple Mobile Tools apps I've been using for the Fossify forks. It was surprisingly painless. #HatTip to the folks maintaining these.

The original Free Code versions of the apps were built with export/ import tools, for both data and settings in some cases. Obviously the Fossify versions have that too, and it worked seamlessly. I've still got the Simple APS installed in case of any gotchas, but if none crop up I'll delete them in a week or so.

Her er apptips om du bruker Android: Fossify!

Fossify is an open-source mobile app initiative aimed at being private and community-driven. It builds on the SimpleMobileTools project, which is no longer maintained. Fossify offers essential apps like Calendar, Contacts, File Manager, Gallery, and Messages.

The initiative promises open-source and ad-free benefits, promoting privacy and community involvement amid growing concerns about data security and corporate surveillance. However, there are questions about why SimpleMobileTools is no longer maintained and whether Fossify has a different agenda or is genuinely supporting the community. The sustainability of Fossify's model is also in question, as open-source projects often struggle without proper funding. There's curiosity about their funding, ownership structure, potential hidden motives from investors, and how they will maintain updates and security fixes.

Concerns about privacy arise despite the claim that Fossify enhances lives without invading privacy. It’s noted that just being open-source doesn’t guarantee security. The mention of hashtags like #unplugtrump suggests possible political leanings or targeted communities, raising questions about whether Fossify has broader agendas beyond providing tools.

Competition from major tech companies also raises red flags, as it's surprising an open-source project could compete with giants like Google and Apple without intervention from these companies. The community aspect of Fossify is emphasized but poses risks of infighting or lack of direction if not well-managed. Questions about their financial sustainability arise due to the ad-free model, considering potential alternative monetization strategies.

Overall, while Fossify presents a vision of community-driven, privacy-focused technology, there are underlying motives and practicalities that need further investigation to ensure they deliver on their promises without hidden catches. #fossify #communitydriven #opensource #privacy #adfree

At a time when #democracy and individual #rights are under attack from all sides through mass #surveillance and algorithmic #manipulation ,it's vital to give our full #support to free and #opensource #software that protects our #privacy .Thus, please consider to #DONATE to your #Mastodon server and to #free software & platforms such as #FDroid , #Fossify , #LibreOffice , #Cryptpad , #Framasoft , #Mozilla , #Tor , #OrganicMaps , etc. In reality, these are #investments in your #future #freedom .
