Opposition to #Trump's tax-cut & spending bill from hardline conservative #Republicans in the US #Senate & billionaire #ElonMusk adds another layer of #uncertainty for businesses.

Employers' reluctance to lay off #workers potentially keeps the US central bank [#FederalReserve] on the sidelines until the end of the year. Financial #markets expect the Fed will leave its benchmark overnight interest rate unchanged in the 4.25%-4.50% range this month, before resuming policy easing in Sept.

36 years ago #Chinese #military ended the #uprising of tens of thousands people fighting for more rights

After having to retrieve the first time the #PLA went to the #Tiananmensquare to destroy the main place of #protest

Though depicted as a #studentprotest in the west, it wasn't only #students , it was #workers and many others, too

#Repression hit them brutally afterwards

The administration is terminating leases for 11 OSHA offices, including the one in Houston, home to many of the nation’s largest oil and gas companies. While OSHA officials continue to conduct inspections, Trump has cut 10 percent of its workforce and more layoffs could be coming. texasobserver.org/osha-heat-st

The Texas Observer · Will Texas Workers Ever Get a Break from the Summer Heat?A long-awaited hearing on a proposed OSHA heat protection rule is set for June 16, but workers are uncertain to get relief under Trump.

Glasgow Subway workers voted overwhelmingly for strike action and will be walking out on the 21st, 25th, 27th & 28th of June with possible future escalation.

Big up to the #subway workers & remember to make alternative journeys on the above days. Staff are citing poor working conditions and working long beyond contracted hours, usually on short notice. #glasgow #transport #scotland #strike #union #workers

By the way, an Emergency Doctor in Gaza, of all people, over 600 days w/out a salary, received this sparkling gem of human decency from someone he’d messaged on social media for help with his GoFundMe. Because nothing says “empathy" like kicking someone while they’re crowdfunding for survival in the middle of a #genocide.

At least 1,400 #healthcare #workers have now been killed in #Gaza during Israel's 19-month military assault.

…As a result of choices made by legislators 35yrs ago, the effort to find a #citizen is not expected at the front end, when employers are considering #hiring #workers from abroad. At that point, employers simply enter the lottery for #H1Bs, & if they get one, they can use it.

Only once a company has employed someone for 5 or 6 yrs & become *committed* to *helping* that person stay in the US permanently must the company show that it is trying to find someone else.

There is even less attention given to what happens w/these foreign #workers — ¾ of whom are…from #India —when many decide they want to stay beyond the 6yr max allowed for an #H1B recipient (a 3yr term can be renewed 1X). To qualify for a #GreenCard, workers must get their employers to sponsor them via the Permanent #Labor Cert process, aka #PERM. And to do that, employers must demonstrate that they made a sincere effort to find someone else—a #UScitizen or permanent resident….

It is a process that nearly everyone involved admits is nonsensical, highly vulnerable to abuse, as well as a contributor to inequities among domestic & foreign #tech #workers.

Yet the system has endured for decades, largely out of public view. There is occasional debate over the ~120k workers from overseas who are awarded #H1B #visas every year for temporary high-skilled employment.

#Fedify 1.6 is approaching with three major enhancements: RFC 9421 HTTP Message Signatures support with double-knocking for seamless backward compatibility, a new builder pattern for better code organization in large applications, and native #Cloudflare #Workers support for serverless deployments. These additions strengthen Fedify's standards compliance while expanding deployment flexibility across different environments. Stay tuned for the official release! 🚀

Across the world workers rights, as well as actual workers, are under attack, typified by the Trump administration.

While there are some marginal improvements across the world, overall 2024 saw a further worsening of a range of workers rights, from freedom of association to the freedom to withdraw their labour (strike).

If you thought class was disappearing as a political issue, think again; workers are the political target of the Right's ascension to Govt.

Sometimes I wonder if increased media attention to the prospect of artificial intelligence (in its various forms) taking away jobs is because continuing technological development has (finally) come for their jobs.

The history of capitalism (since before the Luddites campaigned against it) has been a tale of technological unemployment.... sure AI might be accelerating the attrition on employment, but this is nothing new - the working class have been battered by tech for centuries.
