Today is the anniversary of the shelling of Ft. Sumter by the South Carolina militia, kicking off what would become the American Civil War.

If anyone tries to argue the Civil War was not about slavery, we need only point that misguided (misinformed, miseducated) individual to this statement from the Mississippi secession convention at the time:

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery—the greatest material interest of the world."

Weiß eins hier, wie die Adelheid-Steinmann-Straße in der Heidelberger Südstadt früher hieß, als hier noch das NATO-Hauptquartier war?

Does anyone here know the former name of the street "Adelheid-Steinmann-Str." in Heidelberg Suedstadt district? Before 2015 it was the home of the NATO headquarter.

This week I went to https://www.phoenix-lumieres.com/en to take a deep dive into the history of #Egypt. Phoenix des Lumières presents monumental immersive digital #exhibitions, dedicated to major #artists in the #history of #art and to contemporary art.
This has been my second time there and I enjoyed it immensely. I was surrounded by colours and light and music - what's not to like?!
These pictures show part of the Egypt exhibition. Photos 6 and 7 give you an impression of what the former gas treating plant in which PdL is located looks like. More pictures of the other two exhibitions there (The French Orientalists and Foreign Nature) will follow in a future post.

Got a healthy reminder, that one shouldn’t take anything for granted, but check, check, check...

Used to think, that the three crowns in the Swedish Coat of Arms quite self-evidently represent the three parts of the county: Norrland, Svealand and Götaland.

By chance however came now across a learned text on the subject, by C. G. U. Scheffer, State Herald of Sweden, and behold: ″There has been much speculation about the significance of the coat of arms with the three crowns, and the discussion in regard to its origin has been going on since the sixteenth century without a definitive result having been attained.″

Dang. 😉

Very early #OnThisDay, 12 Apr 1944, Odette Wilen parachutes into France to work as a wireless operator for the British Special Operations Executive. The SOE supports the French resistance.

Wireless operators were at the greatest risk of discovery, as their position could be triangulated whenever they were transmitting messages back to London.

Wilen evades capture by minutes and escapes over the Pyrenees. She lives until 2015.
