Strikes are a great way to push back and build union strength!
A May Day Meditation on the Need for Strikes
https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2025-05-01-may-day-meditation-need-for-strikes/
To-day is #MayDay, also called #InternationalWorkersDay. The date comes from the #HaymarketMartyrs, killed in the US for demanding an eight-hour workday. The US labour movement has gotten way too timid over the last century and it needs to wake tf up.

“Thousands of community organizations, labor unions and human rights activists filled the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, marking #MayDay, also referred to as International Workers' Day.” #UnionStrong

The Western Pennsylvania Communist Party USA stands with working classes throughout the world in celebration of May Day! Take some time today to reflect on the history of this international holiday and how that history impacts the daily lives of workers throughout the U.S.!
Alberta Health Services has referred to the proposal to stop paying minimum wage (imposing a minimum wage gap) as a "basket of goodies", while doling out raises to managers and non-union employees like candy.
The average living wage in Alberta is $21.72, far above the $15 minimum wage.

This is the same organization which is privatizing as many of the services administered by General Support Support Services to outside agencies who are charging many times the cost of internal staff, resulting in "horror stories" in Alberta hospitals, such as some staff reporting "finding dentures and used diapers in supposedly clean linens," and other effects of K-Bro's private laundry services (some picture examples below).
Cleanliness is not to be taken so lightly in healthcare. “Health care works when we focus on quality, not profits,” says Curtis Jackson, AUPE vice-president and chair of the union’s Anti-Privatization Committee. “Health care staff and patients across the province experience the awful reality of for-profit laundry services first-hand. Albertans deserve a higher standard of health care, which can only be achieved through public ownership and accountability. Taking publicly-delivered health services out of the public domain and awarding them as contracts to private corporations has consistently cost our province and everyday Albertans more while providing lower quality and diminished outcomes."
This is also the same organization which is giving a 6% raise to union-exempt employees, which largely (2/3rds) consists of management (since management represents the employer's interests and cannot be a part of union efforts), as well as Deputy Ministers appointed by the UCP as part of their "reorganizing" of AHS into 5 separate health ministries, and other positions which can't be unionized (see letter below).
Not only giving management a raise, but snubbing the Union, under-funding public workers, and forcing privatization.
AUPE wants to bargain and negotiate, but AHS wants to go into formal mediation. Perhaps this is the strategy of the Alberta Government who had immediately thrown the Dispute Inquiry Board (DIB) on CUPE workers in public education when they voted to strike.
Though we have Essential Services Agreements which guarantee a minimum staffing requirement exempt from striking, and that is supposed to protect us from such "back to work" orders by an overreaching government.
In any case, AHS General Support Services workers need to be prepared for the possibility of a strike or employer lockout in the upcoming future.
For health, for education, for working conditions, for human rights, for our trans siblings, for kids, for the rivers, the forests, and the ocean.
Stand up workers.
Let's fight back together.

WA State Nurses Association in Bellingham, WA, rally today outside St. Joseph PeaceHealth Hospital.
The union has spent 1300 hours trying to negotiate an acceptable contract and is on the verge of a strike.
One sticking point: PeaceHealth has raised their health insurance premiums and copays, while cutting 100 local physicians from their plan, many of whom the nurses had as their long term providers.

There are no guarantees that any approaches, new or old, to reversing the labor movement’s decline will succeed. But Eric Blanc makes a case for why we should wager on worker-to-worker unionism.

Great piece by @404mediaco 's @julesaroscoe on the horrible (wifi) conditions of deep ocean fishermen.
Within this context and all other atrocities related to deep sea fishing I also recommend "The outlaw ocean" by Ian Urbina.

As the Trump admin [disciples] are trying to gaslight you into believing that 'those are all paid democcrats' [by Soros no less] it is really refreshing to see who shows up at the #FightOligarchy -rallies in those RED states.
They turn out to be Republican voters [that can still think for thenselves].

“Why is the labor movement so dependent on the government in the first place? Can we afford to be in a situation where one orange man can suspend the union process? The moment has opened our imaginations to what labor organizing would be like without the NLRB.”
