wersdoerfer.deMy Weeknotes for the third Week of JulyI've been thinking about blogging more regularly, even if it's just quick "Today I Learned" posts whenever I discover a new approach to something. In our latest podcast episode, we discussed sentinel values in Python, and my Auto sentinel approach didn't go over well. We even received an email from a listener suggesting improvements, which got me thinking—this deserves a blog post. The takeaway? Avoid sentinel values unless you can't use None because it already has special meaning (like representing null in a database). I also wrote about handling editable installs with uv, since running uv pip install -e ../some-dependency followed by uv run pytest can cause issues when uv run internally calls uv sync. While I don't have a perfect solution yet, my current workaround might help others facing the same problem.

A pretty greek week. Went sea-swimming, went to the Peloponnese, visited both Mycenae and the Temple of Poseidon, explored a new district of athens and ate dakos about 15 times

Taylor Tomlinson saved me
I’ve spent the weekend in London, coming down primarily to see Taylor Tomlinson at the Apollo Hammersmith. It was everything I could have hoped for, my jaw still hurts from laughing so much. It was very queer, it was very anti-Christian, it was very millennial.
At the end, she also played a home video of herself as a three-year-old and it’s the single cutest way I’ve ever seen a show end.
Her support act, Sophie Buddle, was also hilarious.

Broke out the calipers for a quick bit of #FreeCADFriday action. Modelled a replacement plastic part for the @DoESLiverpool events room door handle. It's now printing on the 3D printer.
The temporary old-bike-inner-tube replacement that @huffeec and I installed at the weekend is working surprisingly well, but doesn't look quite as nice
