Cleaned up some of the pond, but those long leaves/fronds are tough to break up, even in death.
A little while later and things are hopping, so to speak. I’m starting to suspect these are the toads we get early in the season. We'll see if there's ungodly singing tonight with strands of eggs scattered around the pond like an unravelled sweater.

The plains spadefoot is toadally cute. This stout amphibian, which inhabits arid regions of western North America, is an “explosive” breeder: Individuals gather en masse after warm, heavy rains to breed. The resulting tadpoles can mature after just 13 days.

I went to clean the filter of my garden pond this morning, and found it already occupied! I am so pleased to see a (endangered) leopard toad enjoying the pond. It's been so hot and dry around here, it must be a relief to it to find a sheltered watery spot.

A bit later I saw it swimming in a deeper part of the pond. Makes me so happy.

"There are small #toads with all the characteristics of large toads except for their size. This genus is different. During its #evolution, it underwent what we biologists call miniaturization, which involves loss, reduction and/or fusion of bones, as well as fewer digits and absence of other parts of its anatomy"
