I see that in 2025, I've been posting in Finnish 90% of the time and in English only 10%, mainly due to the huge influx of Finnish users this year. In previous years, it was the opposite - 90% English and 10% Finnish.

The best part? It doesn't matter here in the Fediverse. With language filtering and translation features, it's truly a top-tier social media.

Probably about time for a new (re) #Introductions post to pin! Been bumbling around on Mastodon since November 2017 on one server or another, and happy to get cozy in a smaller server this time.

I’m not a heavy poster, but lean mostly towards #SciCom and pictures of the #critters and #wildlife I spot in my central Florida backyard or from adventures on my #camping trips.

I’m currently a #caregiver, formerly a professional #Library knowledge ninja. Strong believer in the #RightToRepair and lifelong #Sewcialist. I love fixing and mending things.

My #NeuroSpicy flavour is #80HD, so it may be unsurprising that my academic studies and interests are hella broad. I spend a lot of time digging into local ecology and #HabitatRestoration and preservation. I’m a #space and aeronautics nerd, but I'm also a #Polyglot with an academic background in #linguistics, adult literacy, and ESL. The other part of my academic background is the technical side of theatre.

if you’re the singer in a band, and you tour internationally, wouldn’t you want to speak multiple languages? I feel like you should. For those times between songs, when you’re talking to the audience. If you could, that would set you apart from other bands. Those fans would respect you even more

How many languages do you speak?

That’s often what #rustlang feels like. I started learning C in the late 80s and BASIC before that. Since then I’ve become an expert in several languages and proficient in several others. I’m an experienced #polyglot and though the rust compiler is by far the most helpful - and pushing other compilers to improve - there’s a lot of sharp edges in the grammar itself. Some other polyglots I’m getting into the language agree.

I'm at the #PolyglotGathering in Prague, for the first time since right before the pandemic (2019).

One highlight so far: "If you think Indonesian and Malay are easy, you haven't met the rest of the family" - Brian Loo, in his talk on comparative phonology and grammar of Austronesian languages. This also holds if your primary exposure to Austronesian languages was Polynesian (Hawai'ian, Māori, etc).

Unfortunately, I seem to be the only person trying to wear a mask in indoor spaces, even at an event with over 800 people. I haven't gotten any pushback on this, but the combination of mask + queer hair + bad at pretending to be neurotypical does occasionally draw looks.

Overall, the feel of the event is definitely different from when it was 200-some people jammed into a youth hostel in Berlin, but similar to the Bratislava years (I never got to the Polish instances).

My beloved languages are #perl, #raku and #nim. But I do much more of them like #cpp, #java, #python, #rust and what not. I like compiled languages which give you the ability to shoot you in the foot, because this is the way we learn things.

I like #old #school things, how we did it in the past. I did not stay behind, but new things must proof themself.

For me #respect needs to be earned and is not given for free. I am only interested in people that esteem me and so do I.

My name is Adalwin, I am from Germany, and I am a voracious #polyglot and I love linguistics, I speak about 10+ languages but I am also an information systems major. My main interest in that lie on #software engineering and general systems theory.

I am a hermit, but I also love all things #computer, I learned how to build an 8-bit computer in 3 days and I am always out to learn more things. My guilty pleasure are furry visual novels, I am an active member of that community and patron many such projects. I also love math and help some people with their university math homework, since I tutored Linear Algebra myself for one semester once.
