The (perhaps unfair) irony is that such sentiments seemed old-fashioned from #Biden but sound fresh when put forward by a younger woman — from California, for goodness’ sake! — whom no one can think of as a fogey. In a way that an 81-year-old incumbent never could, she can make calls for a bit of political #peace forward-looking (“#WeAreNotGoingBack”) & harness the nation’s exhaustion w/ #Trump’s gloomy acrimony.

“Our campaign is about saying, ‘We #trust the #people, we #see the people, we #know the people.’ You know one of the things I love about our country? We are a #nation of people who #believe in those #ideals that were #foundational to what made us so #special as a nation. … We #love our #country,” #Harris told the #UAW.

Meanwhile, #Harris was in #Michigan at a #UAW local flanked by #Walz & #ShawnFain, the #union’s visionary president, to extol “the #dignity of #work” & the #value of #collective #action.

While MaraLago #Trump called the #UnitedStates a “very, very sick country right now,” Harris spoke an actual populist language w/a strong emphasis on #patriotism.

My favorite indicator of the campaign’s #CulturalRevolution: For years, #social scientists have noted that Starbucks drinkers are more #liberal while Dunkin’ drinkers are more #conservative. But the #Harris campaign started selling T-shirts w/ “#HarrisWalz” in the colors & typeface of #Dunkin’. So much for “#LatteLiberals.”

All the ink spilled about who was a more “#centrist” or “#liberal” pick for the #VP job lost track of the fact that while #Walz is, indeed, the second kind of liberal he is the very antithesis of the first, the variety that #Republicans love to parody.

Choosing MN Gov #TimWalz as her running mate reinforces the move away from clichés about “coastal politics” & “cultural elites.” Instead, she wants to fight on specific, #practical measures #government can take to #ImproveLives, from #FamilyLeave to expansions of #HealthCoverage. Both #Harris & #Walz are speaking a #soothing& — to pick up on #Democrats’ favorite #virtue these days — #joyful language of #patriotism & national #unity.

Besides seeking to repeal #Biden’s programs outright, #Trump could also seek to divert spending to his own priorities — such as promoting #oil, natural #gas & #coal or, w/ #Congress’ help, using the money to help pay for renewing Trump’s 2017 #TaxLaw, which it’s estimated would COST $4.6T.

Admin ofcls have expressed confidence in another guardrail: Unless #Congress repeals the #Biden-era programs, #Trump would be legally obliged to carry them out. But Trump has asserted he should have the authority to override Congress’ spending decisions — & just this month, #SCOTUS handed presidents broad #immunity from #legal consequences for openly flouting the #law.

#Trump would face varying #legal & practical difficulties in clawing back whatever money #Biden’s agencies have shoveled out the door before Inauguration Day, as well as the hundreds of billions in #transportation & #energy money that #Congress placed in states’ hands to spend.

The new #GOP platform similarly calls for “terminating the Socialist Green New Deal” & ending what it describes as Biden’s “ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANDATE.” [their all-caps]

A limited number of forces might be in place to deter #Trump.

#Republican governors & lawmakers whose states are in line to benefit from #Biden’s programs could object to repealing them.

#Trump has been vague about which parts of #Biden’s programs he would seek to throttle or alter—but not about his #hostility to the #climate agenda.

“All of the trillions…that are…not yet spent, we will redirect…for…projects like roads, bridges, dams & we will not allow it to be spent on meaningless Green New Scam ideas,” Trump said during his speech at the #RNC, vastly *overstating* [lying about] the amt of money Biden’s agencies have yet to disburse.

Tonight, I’d like #Biden to ask, “do you want the next generation to use the dollar as currency or do you want them bartering for #water? Because that’s what will happen under #Trump’s & #Project2025’s total disregard for the #ClimateCrisis. The world will be on #fire, & everyone will be desperate for clean drinking water.”
