Century-old #crustacean mystery solved: Parasitic #barnacles hijack host bodies through root-like networks https://phys.org/news/2025-07-century-crustacean-mystery-parasitic-barnacles.html
"Y-larvae have been studied in #plankton since the 1800s, but the real mystery is figuring out what they grow up to be... they are related to barnacles, but more as distant cousins... if we expose them to #crustaceans' growth hormone, they will hatch out of their little swimming larval shape into a slug-like body, which is similar to what parasitic barnacles do"
For #WorldOceanDay I thought I would share a print with both a vertebrate and invertebrate ocean species. This linocut and gel plate print shows the humpback whale swimming above and a close up of the whale below with six Coronula diadema barnacles.
The Coronula diadema name comes from its barrel and crown-like shape, which can grow to 5 cm (2”) tall and 6 cm (2.4”) in diameter.
#MarshMadness day 21
Two little isopods, Lirceus sp. They are not technically from a marsh they are from a spring, but the spring was rather tiny marsh-like so I am counting it.
Right now I am trying to get people to step up for our environment as the public comment period draws to a close on removing the National Environmental Policy Act. This will effectively destroy almost all environment protections in the United States. If you were worried they will destroy the National Parks for profit, rest assured this is the first step. By removing NEPA, they *will be able to*. Easily.
Please, go leave your comment (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/02/25/2025-03014/removal-of-national-environmental-policy-act-implementing-regulations), call your senators and congress, and keep fighting for nature.

“Kalighat painting, named after the celebrated Hindu goddess Kali, originated from the folk art tradition of rural Bengal.”
Bonus #ArtAdventCalendar & #invertefest &#crustmas print made for #InsertAnInvert2024 Time after time shrimp like crustaceans have evolved crablike forms (through a process called carcinization) and do a good job of pretending to be crabs, but this odd looking fellow is the real deal, a true crab. A new large predator (#Amphipoda) hidden at hadal depths of the #AtacamaTrench: Johanna Weston et al. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14772000.2024.2416430
"Characterized by darkness and intense pressure, the ocean's #HadalZone seems uninhabitable, yet dozens of unique organisms call it home... A new study highlights one of those species... This #crustacean is the first large, active predatory #amphipod from these extreme depths"

An aquatic cave isopod!
Absolutely massive, lobster-like signal crayfish in the river Misbourne. These species were brought to the UK from North America to be farmed, but have escaped into the wild & infiltrated some of the UK’s wild rivers, where they are pushing out the smaller native species from their habitats.

"It was only discovered a few years ago that there also exist venomous #crustaceans—#remipedes that look like centipedes and live in marine #caves... Xibalbanus tulumensis lives in the cenotes, which are the underwater cave systems on the #Yucatan"

"Using the submersible #Alvin, scientists encountered this isopod swimming 3.7 miles deep... Surprisingly, these #isopods can be seen carrying something more common on the ocean's surface: large pieces of Sargassum #algae. At the surface, Sargassum grows using photosynthesis, forming floating forests"

One day I did this #crab - because crabs are meme, right?
Inspired by "tropical style" turtles on graphic in local supermarket.
