Want to Be a #DeepSea Explorer? Don’t Worry, There’s Lots Left.
Humans have visually documented about 1,470 square miles, or a mere 0.001 percent, of the deep #seafloor, according to a new study. That’s a little larger than the size of Rhode Island.
Researchers collected more than 43,000 records of dives and assessed the photos and videos to determine how much of the bottom has been seen by humans.

Yay, our new #microplastic extraction lab at @awi #Bremerhaven is up & running & will relieve our facilities on Heligoland! In our new #Plastic Burden project, our #PhD student Felix Tulatz
will assess microplastics & associated chemicals
in sediments and fauna
from the #Arctic #DeepSea.
Happy Sunday from our research icebreaker Polarstern, which is currently ploughing through the
ice for our annual sampling campaign at HAUSGARTEN observatory to assess the impact of #ClimateChange in the #Arctic #DeepSea

New bacterial genome announcement from our team:
Draft genome sequence of Desulfobacterota strain M19, a mesophilic sulfur-disproportionating bacterium from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mra.00295-25
This new bacterium was found on a #DeepSea hydrothermal vent, 1663m deep under the Atlantic ocean surface. It can grow by both "eating" and "breathing" a single chemical—pure elemental sulfur.
#UN Secretary General issues strong call for precaution during opening speech at #UNOC3 when stating “The #DeepSea cannot become the Wild West”. OceanCare urges a global moratorium on deep-sea mining to protect one of Earth’s last untouched ecosystems. #DefendTheDeep

“Some called it wicked, but she called it love. Unfortunately, her loves were rather short-lived.”
Today's #Mermay prompt, #Wicked, fits so well with my little Mermay's taste for sailors (which she happened to develop 2 years ago, around the prompt #Sailor) that I just couldn't resist...

Experts alarmed over Trump’s promotion of #deepsea #mining in international waters
Critics call for an industry moratorium until more scientific data can be obtained.
On April 24, President Trump signed an #executiveorder promoting #deepseamining in the US and international waters, touting the industry’s potential to boost the country’s economic growth and national security.
Thirty-three countries are also calling for a moratorium or outright ban on deep-sea mining.

Rare giant "shrimp" is more widespread than previously believed, new findings reveal https://phys.org/news/2025-05-rare-giant-shrimp-widespread-previously.html
The supergiant #amphipod Alicella gigantea may inhabit over half of the world’s oceans https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.241635
"#Amphipods like A. gigantea are #shrimp-like #crustaceans known for their narrow frames and a signature hump-backed curl in their posture. They roam the #DeepSea, from the abyssal depths (3,000–6,000 m) to beyond hadal zones (>6,000 m)"

"The Carnarvon Flapjack #Octopus is a gelatinous #DeepSea octopus that grows to around 4 centimetres diameter... It's the 10th and latest #NewSpecies to be described from specimens collected during a 2022 voyage by RV Investigator... The #FlapjackOctopus is a deep-sea shape shifter with the ability to flatten its body to resemble a pancake—or flapjack—or to pull itself up to look like a tiny gelatinous umbrella."
This is my favorite exhibit at the aquarium: Into the Deep. It's special because it's also the reason why I now work at the aquarium.
I have a habit of listening to random podcasts on topics I don't know anything about, and somehow when I was job-searching last year I heard a lot of 'Monterey Bay Aquarium and MBARI and deep sea research' podcasts. With marine scientists and engineers who built the ships and tools etc.
I was like 'I want to work somewhere like that!" Looked it up, and there was a job for literally the thing that I do. At my onsite job interview, I touched a giant isopod, and I was like 'this is better than any other job I can get. I can touch a giant isopod everyday if I want.'

In 1979, A #DeepSea #Mining Experiment Carved Up The Seabed. 44 Years On, We're Finding Out Its Impacts
“The most striking observation is that the tracks made by the mining machine 44 years ago look almost as if they were made yesterday,” study author Dr Adrian Glover of the Natural History Museum, London, told IFLScience. “This was not unexpected in a way. We know that biological processes in the deep sea are quite slow.”
