In my work, I have sometimes been writing rules based code to handle tricky tasks. Chiefly using a thing called #CLIPS, which is peculiar, interesting, American, and I guess, dated now.

But, in my earlydays; rule based systems, knowledge based systems, grammar models, blackboards, neural nets, perceptrons were all techniques that could, might, hopefully, maybe - birth artificial intelligence. All hopeful bright future things, ready to spring into the world when sufficient networking, CPU and RAM became cheap.

Large Language Models were not, I recall, A Thing.

I didn't stay with #AI, I tapped off in 1990, had children, mortgages and divorces instead.

Forty years later and now, when I say "AI", my boss thinks "Chat GPT". I do wish it had not gone that way. It seems such a waste of all that hope of the eighties and nineties. It all became machines to copy, vitamise and project pineapple flavoured corn flecked content. Hideous.

Whatever happened to all the non #LLM AI? Is there some dark seedy bar with fiftysomething AI practitioners nursing Guinesses and drawling sadly about the good old days? Or are they all hard at work trying to overlock the fraying edges of LLMs with "guardrails" "fact engines" etc etc?

Tegenwoordig lijkt quasi elke videoclip eruit te willen zien alsof die het wereldrecord cuts/minuut wil overtreffen, maar o wat hebben we soms eens wat rust nodig.. ook visueel.
'Zo maken ze ze niet meer', lijkt een cliché maar clichés komen vaak van waarden en waarheden.
Deze clip heeft géén enkele cut, in de cinemawereld is dat een aantal keer met succes gebeurd, zoals bij Russian Ark of ook het regiedebuut van Woody Harrelson.
