ARRRRRRGH!!!!

@petrisch @nextcloud

Here's the thing. I don't even begrudge Nextcloud posting videos to YouTube. The part I have a problem with is that they say they're promoting decentralization, yet after all these years they refuse to post to any alternative.

Similarly, they provide no option to use @unifiedpush , but *only* allow Googles Firebase for notifications.

Using Google trackers on the website is pretty ridiculous though when such high quality alternatives exist, such as @Matomo .

They also never bother to explain WHY they continue to ignore all of these things that so obviously go against the values they supposedly stand for, Just crickets to any questions and more promotional videos / blog posts.

This week in #FDroid (TWIF) has been live since last week, what you've missed:

* More categories and a Client bugfix WiP
* More appid and key changes
* #DAVx5 now with #UnifiedPush support
* #FennecFDroid search engine shenanigans, check your settings now!
* 15 years on #OSMAnd and better navigation
+ 4 new apps
& 131 more updates

Please 🚀. I'm going to stop short of saying you should not install the #ICEBlock app, but you should know that you're painting a giant target on your back if you use it, and it does not protect your information adequately. The Trump administration is not being coy about how they see this app and it's users, citing charges of obstruction of justice and general threats of prosecution.

The developer ignorantly insists the only way to safely use it is through iOS app store. That ignores the fact that Apple collects data on what users are installing what apps. It also ignores that the gov has been intercepting push notifications for several years now, so it would be as simple as comparing that data against those who receive push notifications at specific times to determine who is using the app.

The app is also closed-source, so the community cannot inspect it for vulnerabilities.

If they distributed through a 3rd party app store on Android, such as #fdroid (which you cannot do on iOS), they could allow users to run their own notification system using #unifiedpush. Google would not be involved at any stage.

Yes, this would be a high barrier to entry for use, but I think the usecase demands it. Almost certainly we will soon see prosecution for the apps' users and probably also removal from the App Store. Apple most certainly does not care enough to fight the government over this.

That is, unless, as I suspect, this app is actually a #honeypot.

@DoKo @moshidon Setting up #UnifiedPush today has almost driven me insane. Tried different distributors, different #ntfy servers, not even the UP test app was triggering notifications despite registering successfully (as all other apps did). Then I switched to the official ntfy server and most apps started working but #ElementX based #Matrix clients did not. Then I read about this issue: github.com/element-hq/element-
And after a while they just started working too... but not the original Element client. 🤦 🤷

🤯 🤯

  • I've ported UnifiedPush to Firefox, so it can receive background notifications using the service you want, specially useful for PWA (installable web application)
  • ntfy provides a PWA
  • So I can receive ntfy notifications with their PWA through any push service, for instance using Sunup :D
