Learned to do custom normals in Blender. The workflow is a huge pain, but it was well worth the effort. Quite pleased with the shading of the face and the neck now.

(Until now, I used a shader hack to remove the weird face shadow, but that came at the cost of also losing the nice neck shadow.)

To the left: VTuber model with custom normals applied to the character's face. There is just a tiny bit of shadow on the right side of the face and also on the neck. Kind of what you expect of the anime style. To the right: VTuber model with default normals. There's an awkward shadow covering the bottom half of the character's face because that's how lighting would realistically work. But that kind of realism doesn't mix well with the anime style.
