With news of the death of Francis, the first Jesuit to be elected Pope, I thought I’d share this photo of a statue of Ignatius, the founder of Francis’ order. Taken outside the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in NYC. More personal thoughts in the alt text.

Ignatius founded the order of the Society of Jesus — the Jesuits — to which I (sometimes unwillingly) feel a connection, since I attended a Jesuit school for many years of my childhood. I’m no longer religious, for many reasons, but I still wrestle with that upbringing and try to untangle the good from the bad.

Pope Francis, who passed away this morning, was the first Jesuit to be elected to the position. He wasn’t perfect by any means, and the Church he led continues to be a VERY problematic institution, but I appreciated his gestures towards inclusivity (insufficient though they were) and his speaking up for climate justice, for uplifting the poor, and for ending the genocide in Gaza. I hope his successor continues further down that path.

Man hat dann beide später in einem Massengrab gefunden. // A heart-breaking #memorial in Sarajevo for the Srebrenica massacre. It shows a father (Ramo) calling out to his son (Nermin) to surrender, telling him the Serbians "won't do anything". Their remains were later found in a mass grave.

I've often said there's no statue of Mary Queen of Scots in Glasgow, which is true, but there is this sculpture of her on the gates of St Nicholas Gardens behind the Provand's Lordship on Castle Street. So, what makes it a sculpture rather than a statue? Officially, a sculpture is any three dimensional work of art, while a statue is an approximately life-sized and more or less realistic full figure representation of a person or animal.

When hiking up the hills behind one of the many estates in #Hongkong it is very likely that one would come across some makeshift common areas like an open air gym, a communal open air tea kitchen, or maybe some type of gardening lot. Hong Kongers are as creative as any urbanites in reclaiming space and making it their own - especially in those urban/nature frontiers. Many times, those spaces seem to replace the living rooms of the locals, offering them a refuge from cramped living quarters. One more curious thing that one might stumble across are legions of #gods, or rather porcelain god statues. These gatherings are not as random as they may seem though. The statues symbolize the importance of those deities to local people and stand for disruption in their human's lives. Whether it was a move, or death those gods lost their place in their human's home. But who could throw away a deity? That is why many end up with peers in some secluded spot on the hills and mountains of Hong Kong - maybe abandoned but not lonely.

Lovely run up to Loch Earn and on to Killin.
The mirror man is back on the shores of the loch, he was removed for a few years - not sure why..
Sadly it was a grey day else he would have shone and looked even more alien like
vase

Beautifully sculpted green men on the obelisk sundial in King's Park on the Southside of Glasgow. This is one of three Victorian replicas of the 1635 Mannerist sundial at Newbattle Abbey House in Midlothian.
