Apologet:innen verweisen noch gelegentlich auf diese scheinbar kurze Dauer, um die deutsche Kolonialherrschaft als „Episode“ abzutun. In Wirklichkeit hatte sie einschneidende Folgen für Namibia ebenso wie für Deutschland, und die Konsequenzen sind noch heute zu spüren. Für viele Namibier:innen bedeutet etwa die Landenteignung im Jahr 1907, von der die meisten afrikanischen Gruppen im Zentrum und im Süden betroffen waren, Landlosigkeit, aber auch den Ausschluss von ihren Ahnengräbern. Dies ist eine noch nachdrücklichere Erinnerung als die zahlreichen „deutschen“ Denkmäler und Bauten. Deutsche können es sich dagegen leisten, über die Kolonialvergangenheit wenig oder nichts zu wissen, aber die deutsche Gewaltgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts ist nicht ablösbar von der Kolonialexpansion. 1884 markiert auch die Wendung zur „Weltpolitik“ und damit einen entscheidenden Schritt auf dem Weg zu zwei Weltkriegen.
