It’s the last hurrah for the yellow lilies. But the purple coneflowers are thriving and will keep things pretty for the rest of summer.
The new post for the rain gauge is tall enough, but just barely.

Common eastern bumblebee, aka pocket panda
Plants are Fukushu kumquat (Citrus obovata) and pitanga-juba (Eugenia repanda)
I neglected to mention on a previous post that the pitanga-juba flowers smell like jasmine!

This is one of my red hybrid jabuticaba’s second flush this summer (after winter/spring). I can’t get a pic of all the flower buds in two shots but it is safe to say that it now outcompetes tomatoes in size/production/nutrition.
I highly recommend this plant for food security in a changing climate. Thread below:

Now blooming: Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum).
Like many other people, I first heard about Silphium from an essay by Aldo Leopold in “A Sand County Almanac” (link in comment).
Now, I’m fortunate to live in a place (SW Iowa) which never was completely tamed, and now has more and more neglected roadsides due to depopulation.

As the article points out, the extreme low cost, almost free. Does that cost take into account the numbers available, time to sort, hack and maintain the service? A lateral thinking solution.

Please enjoy these glorious blooms. They barely last a day before setting fruit.
The little green dots beside the flowers are a second set of blooms.
Eugenia repanda aka pitanga-jambo
It takes at least 4yrs to fruit from seed but if you have the patience, they are worth the effort for how much fruit they produce. Compact plant, bring inside in winter.
