Decadal variability in average temperatures across the #Antarctic during the month of May...

On the other side of the globe, #Antarctic sea ice is beginning to rapidly expand as austral winter approaches. Last month observed quite a bit of regional variability in this area too, though it was generally below the 1981-2010 mean.
Satellite-derived data provided by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).
An overall warming trend has been observed in the Antarctic continent by scientists over a long term with the speed 0.12 C per decade, China Central Television reported on Sunday citing the China Meteorological Administration

@ZLabe It is truly the last look at the CryoSat-2/SMOS (CS2SMOS). In October we will continue with CryoSat-2/Sentinel-3/SMOS (CS3SMOS) in the #Arctic. CS3SMOS will also be generated for #Antarctic #seaice.

I've added a new visualization of #Antarctic sea ice thickness averaged by year, which parallels my version for the #Arctic by design. However, unlike the Arctic, there aren't any obvious long-term trends (annual mean).
Graphic will be updated yearly at https://zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice-figures/. GIOMAS data.
Research on #mercury #pollution in #Antarctic #penguins
Scary that publicizing #pollutants like Rachel Carson did in the early 1960s with DDT in the book Silent Spring continues to be fertile #science
40 years ago today RRS Discovery III arrived at Montevideo, marking the end of my first #Antarctic and Southern Ocean research cruise. The ship had been my home for four and a half months, since 23rd November. Part of me wanted to head home, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to explore some of the sights of South America, so my adventure continued.
Here, using an Earth system model with interactive Antarctic ice-shelf cavities, we show that regional hydrography and topography determine a cavity tipping point. The Filchner–Ronne ice-shelf cavity will encounter such a tipping point with abrupt warm-water intrusion, rapid basal melt increase and massive freshwater release in response to increasing CO2 levels within this century. Conversely, the Ross Ice Shelf shows a more gradual response
À chaque fois que je peins une nouvelle baleine qui saute, je commence en me disant que c’est moche et que ça va être raté... Et puis une fois terminée, je me dis finalement que c’est la meilleure que j’ai jamais faite !
Here's a look at the mean state of #Antarctic sea ice concentration (fraction of ice in a given area) just after the sea ice minimum (austral summer) as the freeze season begins...

That's how the volcanic Australian territory of #HeardIsland & #McDonaldIslands in the #Antarctic ended up with a 10% tariff. The #penguins got off lightly, you might say.
But #Madagascar - one of the poorest nations in the world w/GDP per capita of just over $500 - meanwhile faces a 47% tariff on the modest $733M of exports of vanilla, metals & apparel that it did with the US last year.
Last month was the 4th lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of March
This was 1,070,000 km² below the 1981-2010 March average. Data from NSIDC at https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index
#PhotoOfTheDay: #Antarctic Sea Ice Plunged in Summer #2025
In 2025, summer sea ice in the Antarctic tied for the second-lowest minimum extent ever recorded in the 47-year satellite record, according to NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

An #Antarctic Beech (Nothofagus antarctica) growing in the grounds of Tyntesfield House near Bristol. Close relatives of this tree were abundant in temperate forests in West Antarctica in the earliest Oligocene, before development of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
