"...footage of protests evolving to riots in LA, political rallies turned battlegrounds, culture war skirmishes escalating into real harm, and neighborhoods bracing for unrest. There’s a rising cadence of rage in the United States, one that echoes the decades-long Troubles ... can’t unsee the parallels... Northern Ireland wasn’t simply a “religious conflict” .... suspicion became survival, and the other side’s dehumanization became a necessary logic."

The 1973 film "Streets of Ulster" available for the first time in 50 years and free to watch. h/t @BeebsyMcA

It does not sugar-coat the conflict so necessarily contains scenes of violence and discussion of injury and death. Video quality is not great as it has been recovered from sources such as VHS tape.

Media Burn ArchiveStreets of Ulster - Media Burn ArchiveShot in the midst of street battles in Northern Ireland, "Streets of Ulster" provides a look at the people whose lives have been affected by this conflict. (Description from the catalog for the 1976 Women's Video Festival.)

Today in Labor History January 30, 1972: Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland occurred when British soldiers gunned down 14 Roman Catholic civil-rights marchers in Derry. The victims were all unarmed and running away from the soldiers when they were shot. Many more were injured by shrapnel, rubber bullets or batons. The soldiers who killed them were members of the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment, which had committed the Ballymurphy Massacre several months prior. Two days after Bloody Sunday, Paul McCartney recorded, “Give Ireland Back to the Irish.” It was one of the only songs banned by the BBC. John Lennon later recorded “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” And, of course, there is the 1983 U2 song, “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” youtube.com/watch?v=0izN111lXU
