UK Based Question: What loam based peat-free compost are people recommending these days. Not the cheap fluffy "potting compost" crap at B&Q that is full of wood and barely retains water!

Something soil/loam based.

Few of the usual retailers spec the stuff properly!

(I am being consulted on specifying the bits to buy to put some salad planters in at work.)

Our thuja trees are relentless. Every year, without fail, they produce a crapton of leaves(?), seeds, and other assorted stuff. We use it as cover around bushes etc. as it's free and our dog doesn't eat it. But I will soon have a third filled compost heap and no more places to put it.

I have pleaded, but the trees won't listen. How can the shedding never end? Where does it all come from???

Updating my #introduction to celebrate changed balance of life things. I live and walk by the sea in Wollongong, and I’m a gardener. In 2025 I joined up with a small organisation focused on compassionate ways of working in healthcare. I’ve been on here since 2016 and I’m still here, listening and thinking.

I believe we have to work together differently to face the future we’re facing. Life is fragile.

#compostodon #TransRights #SafeWork #CoDesign and curious about most things

The allotment continues to cook its materials over the winter. The compost and leaf crate are both full, as is the comfrey bin.
I also got given a mini greenhouse thingy, but so far the only use for it I've found is to store bought compost that I've been paid in kind with.
It always amazes me how such a large volume of material transforms into a relatively small amount of compost. Its an amazing process though.

@compost Oh no! In the end it’s your choice and you surely have good reasons to do this.

But before you do, please know that your posts have been (are!) for me a source of knowledge and inspiration (e.g. for our new leaf composter). And I bet I don’t speak only for myself.

I can only say thank you for sharing and kindly ask you to reconsider leaving. Not necessarily now, but maybe later if the time is right.

Until then, godspeed and take good care.

@DoomsdaysCW I discovered vermicomposting (worm compost) and decided to build my own composter.

Composting is fascinating, ecologically meaningful, reminds us of the importance of healthy soil and even has a magical feeling when waste is converted to valuable compost casting.

It’s beautiful to read that you were composting together with neighbours.

#Introduction Hi, I’m dipping my toe into the waters of a new to me server. It feels like it will be a better fit than my current which I am keeping open for the time being.

Edited to add: I have now closed my previous account on another server down. I am happy to be here.

For some days now I’ve noticed my worm casting had a hole in one corner of the composter all the way down to the steel mesh. I put some cardboard at the bottom of the composter to close it and surprise today it had signs of being chewed away from below.

It seems that shrews visit my worm composer regularly and use it as a worm dispenser for dinner.

I’ve adapted the slab supports to prevent access to it from the bottom. Let’s see how that works out…
