For some time now, We Distribute has been looking at organizing a fundraiser for our organization. It might be a Kickstarter, it might be something else. Still figuring that one out.

As a tech publication based entirely within the #Fediverse, we have a unique opportunity to expand our operations, provide better consistency in the articles we publish, and pay people to write and create media with us.

At this point, we’re very small, and at constant risk of burnout. I am hoping to change this. If I were to pass around a form to collect email addresses for people who want to be there on our Day One campaign launch, would this be something you’d be interested in?

Wait, is @rabble saying what I think he's saying? That's there a central moderation power in BlueSky that you can't opt-out of? Even if you use an ATProto stack totally independent of BS services? Or does he just mean you can't opt-out if you're using the BS AppView, Relay, or either?

"... advocacy is one of the things that we currently lack within the network and we really need to execute well on, if we want to help bring more people in. The network's growth is kind of dependent on that, and if we don't keep growing, there's some concern that we might not be able to maintain the momentum that we've built up to this point."

I'm all for organic growth, but we don't need it to improve service.

#TIL about @frequency, a federated photo-sharing app;

"I'm trying to be very upfront. Like, OK you're going to have to pay for this service. But I really want to make it as affordable as possible. I want to give you options to pay for your family and friends, to bring everybody in if there's someone that can't pay for it ..."

#TIL about #SubClub;

"The overall idea behind sub.club is simple: people can pay a set amount of recurring donations, and gain access to posts from a private ActivityPub account for exclusive content. Creators using sub.club post private DM’s to their sub.club actor, and these messages get relayed into the private feed."

I’m looking at holding a public presentation about #WeDistribute - our past, what we’ve accomplished, and where we’re going, with a live Q&A session at the end. The goal is to highlight what we’re working on, along with some pain points, in the hopes that this might drive interest in fundraising.

We’re a small volunteer organization with big dreams.

Does this sound like something people would be interested in attending? We would upload the resulting video to PeerTube afterwards, for anyone who missed it.

Hi @deadsuperhero, I just saw the article on #WeDistribute taking a break;

Hope you and the rest of the team are OK. Good on you for slowing down taking care of yourselves.

It's been an exhausting couple of years, and I suspect the flood of vitriol and infighting unleashed by the launch of the SWF has given us all pause. Definitely a good time to take stock and think strategically about our involvement in the fediverse Especially those of us still doing it all unpaid.

We Distribute · We Distribute Is On Temporary Hiatus - We DistributeOur regular schedule has been interrupted, due to difficulties sustaining our regular programming. It's not over, but we need help, and we're sorry.

For the past few years, I’ve been running #WeDistribute, a tech blog / news publication dedicated to open source, decentralized social communication systems. It’s evolved from a tiny personal blog to something that kind of resembles a news outlet.

This is a musing on my journey, and my hopes on where I can take this thing.

deadsuperhero · My Hopes for We Distribute - deadsuperheroFor the past few years, I've been running a tech blog focused on the Fediverse. It's evolving into a bonfide news organization.
A small, but hopeful update: #WeDistribute has been going through a lengthy process of becoming a Nonprofit Corporation. The main hurdles are now complete; we just have to tackle the big one!

I am working to establish my long-term hobby into a proper 501c3 Non Profit, with the goal of taking tax-deductible donations, sponsorships, grants, and premium subscription sales to raise funds and pay people: writers, artists, audio engineers, and more.

There's a lot to figure out still, but we're hoping to do a big crowdfunding push soon!

So, we need to have a bit of a talk. Don't worry, it's a good thing.

How should I say this?

Building #WeDistribute and reporting on this space has been a unique and rare privilege. We're reporting on a nascent technology beat, and witnessing it grow and evolve in real-time. Working with @damon and @laurenshof on @decentered and getting to talk to do many incredible people has been validating beyond my wildest dreams.
