After turning on both users and advertisers, tech companies only had one more place to go: employees. Individual productivity (AI-powered or otherwise) will not save you, because the issue is not performance.

In return, employees rightly stopped caring.

But unless you care, you can't do good design.

The Product PicnicFear vs PlayFear is choking out thoughtfulness in tech, and it can't be replaced with "more productivity" — because productivity is not what motivates corporate layoffs.

Today is the day before I write my weekly newsletter, so of course Brave chooses today to roll out an update that obliterates all of my open tabs by combining "redundant" "inactive" ones. And then automatically opts every user into this feature.

I had a few Mastodon tabs open, now they are just one tab that points to mastodon.social.

So, uhh...anyone write anything good on #Product / #UX topics that they want me to feature this week? 😅

Techies are always chasing the mythical tool that will let them "focus on the work" and avoid tedious distractions like "talking to people." AI tools are only the latest to promise this impossible dream.

But talking to people IS the work. You can complain about it on the internet, or take responsibility and make your life a lot easier.

The Product PicnicCan Designers Avoid Meetings?LLMs are not the first tool to promise that they can free us from having to talk to people so we can "focus on the work." But talking to people IS the work.

I discovered very annoying news on #Twitch last night. I was under the impression that if I ran pre-roll ads, it disabled mid-roll ads altogether but NO. You can’t disable mid-roll ads at all now :(

So my question is this. Which is LEAST annoying of the following options (which would you PREFER) for you personally:

My objective is to runas few ads as possible and/or have them be the least annoying as possible. Please help with this user research k thanks!

Any recommendations on data oriented remote courses for #userresearch ?

- User behaviour analytics, effective use
- Excel pivot tables and charts
- Statistical methods to manage confidence

I have a math background and Excel formulas don't have many secrets for me. Already using analytics and doing first analysis in path explorations.

Thanks!

"I have taste and you don't" is a great way to never get anybody to agree with you. So is "your solution is not the way I would have done it."

The only way to get off doing 12-hour shifts at the feature factory is to defy its logic.

The Product PicnicTaste is a dead end; what you should have is a point of viewBy justifying decisions on the basis of taste, designers are throwing away the influence they need for preventing low-value feature bloat

I'm looking for a new design role!

My work friends (I’d like to believe) would say I’m helpful and smart. That I care about the people using what I design. Plus, I’m good at troubleshooting tricky group dynamics. To summarize: I’m fun to work with!

If you know anyone looking for a senior/staff/principle product designer, tell them to check out my BRAND NEW website and send me a message.

Thanks a million ✊

www.danritz.comDesigner, Researcher, ManagerHello. I'm Daniel Ritzenthaler. Most people call me Dan or Ritz. A designer since 2002. Along the way I've explored several research and management roles.

#UXDesign is in disarray. The idea of design-for-use has been replaced with design-for-sales, and its incentives (make more features so that you have more shit to sell) don't align with user-centered work and #UserResearch.

In this issue, I investigate the ground-level view of how this happened and how to stop it.

The Product PicnicWhy design goes wrong and how to set it right, part 1At the root of design's crisis is an incentives crisis throughout tech. But we have tools that let us cut through the magical thinking of feature factories - if we're willing to use them.

Peeps, I am doing interviews with people to understand search and discovery behaviors, and am looking to speak to people who do a lot of writing/referring/thinking with books/articles/papers etc. DM or @ if you are interested in a 15-20 minute chat about this. #UserResearch
