#Palestine / US proposes additional $8 billion arms sale to Israel during a genocide in Gaza

The Biden administration has notified Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to #Israel, encompassing munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery. This is happening while the #ICJ is considering a case brought by South Africa alleging that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The ICJ has ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide, including preventing the killing and harming of Palestinians and ensuring the provision of humanitarian assistance. The court noted the severe humanitarian situation in Gaza and considered statements by Israeli officials.

Despite international criticism and protests demanding an arms embargo, the US continues to support Israel, having previously approved significant military aid and while vetoing a UN Security Council resolutions for a ceasefire.

The ICJ ruling summary states that "at least some of the acts and omissions alleged by South Africa to have been committed by Israel in Gaza appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the Convention". Furthermore, the Court concluded that "the facts and circumstances mentioned above are sufficient to conclude that at least some of the rights claimed by South Africa and for which it is seeking protection are plausible. This is the case with respect to the right of the Palestinians in Gaza to be protected from acts of genocide and related prohibited acts identified in Article III".
