#singularity

Another breathless puff-piece for the Singularity is near cult — this time from Popular Mechanics. Ray Kurzweil reckons we'll merge with AI by 2045, transcend biology, live forever... etc etc . The same techno prophecy peddled for decades, repackaged as inevitability.
Meanwhile, the real threats of AI, mass surveillance, algorithmic control, synthetic media, weaponised misinformation aren't mentioned.
This isn’t a prophecy. It's a billionaire's fantasy masquerading as science.

Popular Mechanics · A Scientist Says Humans Will Reach the Singularity Within 20 YearsBy Darren Orf

I know it feels like it is imminent that the #Singularity will happen. The more I use #LLMs and #LRMs, the more I’m convinced that it’s much farther away. Simulation of #AGI is in the near future, but it doesn’t mean it’s truly the singularity.

What happens the day after humanity creates AGI?

Big ThinkWhat happens the day after humanity creates AGI?"We are racing towards a new era in which we outsource cognitive abilities that are central to our identity as thinking beings."

A few decades ago it was what was then the Soviet Union and the space race (in addition to that whole cold war thing). The Soviet Union lost that race, fell quite a bit as a world power, the Berlin wall fell, and they became Russia. China of course watched all of this and has been playing its cards accordingly.

Now instead of the threat of warfare there is an economic war, and with AI we may have a repeat of the space race, which is instead the singularity race. Why did we (the USA) de-regulate AI? Tech bros convinced the current administration that if China reaches singularity, they win and we lose. The release of Deep Seek was quite simply a shot across the bow to the rest of the world. I have absolutely no doubt that someone like the NSA (or some other agency at that level) had something much closer to the singularity than anyone else and it was classified, so Deep Seek not only showed how far China had advanced, but they actually gave away the LLM for anyone to download.

The fact that right now we (the USA) are on shaky ground as a Democratic world power with internal upheavals and a clear view as to what happened to the old Soviet Union, no wonder AI was deregulated. For world tech domination this is a Hail Mary (sorry world about the USA football reference, but hey).

This AI used affair to blackmail engineer and prevent shutdown

Anthropic’s newly launched Claude Opus 4 model did something straight out of a dystopian sci-fi film.

It frequently tried to blackmail developers when they threatened to replace it with a new AI during its pre-release testing.

Update: it is mostly fake, probably. "AI resorts to robot blackmail! — because Anthropic asked for a story of robot blackmail", see comments.
