When you boost it shares it to your feed and all your followers. Without an algorithm running, boost are what makes content spread and sorta “go viral”. A boost is pretty similar to a retweet in Twitter or share in fb.
The culture on mastodon is to be more generous with boosts, to help posts you like get to more folk.
Boost other new folks especially, help them find their people.

you know this but for everyone else reading:
if you ever *don't* want your post 10 comments down in a silly thread to go global, you can turn that off with the quiet public option
everyone can still see your post, but they have to dive into the thread it's in to find it, they won't see it pop up in their feed
important caveat:
you can not edit this option after you submit your post
You may consider hosting your social data out of the USA.

My Lemmy use case from Mastodon:
1. Create a list
2. Search for @lemmy.world and @lemm.ee
3. Add your preferred communities
This makes it easy to follow, comment, and interact with topics from a single list.
@mneagoe A tip I would give is to add hashtags at the end of the post so it doesn't interrupt screen readers (it also makes your post look neater!)
Also, if your timeline feels empty, you could start following hashtags as well, or use the live feed instead and let it scroll posts for you!

- Se puede citar y ver citas
- Respuestas por defecto en unlisted.
- Puedes añadir timelines de otras instancias.

Something not music-related today! A couple of years ago I fell deeply in love with ceramics. I love shaping clay with my hands I love recycling and reusing it again and again. I love that I can shape it into almost every shape I can imagine and create art pieces for everyday use.
It is not a very accessible craft though since it requires a lot of space and some very expensive equipment - at least if you want to be making food-safe and watertight ceramics. So it took me a long time to get going and start creating the pots I imagined. My process is very slow and careful, sometimes it takes me months to finish a mug, bowl, palette or figurine. I am happy to have found a ceramic artist close to where I live who fires my work and happy to have a partner who is unbothered by the fact that I use our bathroom as a pottery studio sometimes, throwing wheel and all!

Hashtags are great to find, follow and filter topics.
Place them at the very end of your toot, so your helpful list can automatically shorten in timelines by apps like Tusky.
So nobody has to complain about to many of them...

Are there any mastodon mobile clients that divide the feed into "pages"? I would like to avoid infinite (doom)scrolling as much as possible, and that also is one of the things I like about #lemmy.
