According to a @newyorktimes report, there's not really much evidence of the reported decline in international visitors to the U.S. due to the Trump administration — visits from some places including the Republic of Ireland and Argentina have even gone up. But there's one exception: Canada, where tariffs and threats to the country's sovereignty have upturned everything from shopping habits to politics and, of course, travel plans. Ticket sales for summer travel are down 21 percent on last year; car crossings at the land border dropped more than 40% in April 2025 vs. the same period in 2024. If you're Canadian, or if you're from elsewhere but would like to come and spend your money up north, @cbcnews's The Current has compiled this list of destinations, from Tofino, B.C., to Basin Head Provincial Park, P.E.I. Find that NYT story at the second link.

@MalcolmNance The removal of ALL #Kentucky bourbon and #Tennessee whiskey from the shelves of ALL Liquor Control Board of Ontario stores has bourbon exporters in Kentucky crying in their beer chasers. They are also big #GOP donors and have certainly called #RandPaul ‘onto the carpet’ over the #tariffs - aka #TrumpTaxes.

Note: LCBO stores are the only places you can buy wine and whiskey in #Ontario. It is the single largest purchaser of wine and whiskey in the WORLD.

Canadian friends,

We avoided the worse,
and this is fantastic,
but let's not get complacent.

The Conservatives have gained
lots of votes, despite being horrible demagogues, and the disinformation machine and foreign interference are running full speed here too.

We've got less than 4 years to
fight against fascist propaganda and electoral manipulation.

Let's get to it now! 🇨🇦✊

Lol, concentration of votes matters, for sure.

Federalist parties in Canada, however, are also opposed to proportional representation because not only did the Bloc gain more seats than its votes under #fptp, under a #PR system, they would likely get even more seats, as people would be less reluctant to vote Bloc, this increasing the risk of another independence referendum.

@fairvote.ca

Read this excellent 18 part thread of just what the fuck happened Monday night.

6 of the last 8 federal elections in Canada were minority governments. #fptp is now just banana republic fuckery.

The 3 circles here, from 2021, will be even more vile for 2025.

Annnnnnny NDP MP who supports Carney must demand a #proportionalrepresentation bill to be passed by the end of 2025.
