   “Darkness” is shorthand for anything that scares me — that I want no part of — either because I am sure that I do not have the resources to survive it or because I do not want to find out. The absence of God is in there, along with the fear of dementia and the loss of those nearest and dearest to me. So is the melting of polar ice caps, the suffering of children, and the nagging question of what it will feel like to die. If I had my way, I would eliminate everything from chronic back pain to the fear of the devil from my life and the lives of those I love — if I could just find the right night-lights to leave on.
   At least I think I would. The problem is this: when, despite all my best efforts, the lights have gone off in my life (literally or figuratively, take your pick), plunging me into the kind of darkness that turns my knees to water, nonetheless I have not died. The monsters have not dragged me out of bed and taken me back to their lair. The witches have not turned me into a bat. Instead, I have learned things in the dark that I could never have learned in the light, things that have saved my life over and over again, so that there is really only one logical conclusion. I need darkness as much as I need light.

The Right to the Night: New Legal Advocacy Strategies to Address Terrestrial Light Pollution Dana Zartner, Aparna Venkatesan, and John Barentine' We are losing the night. While this may seem like a strange statement, it reflects a growing reality that could severely impact many living things on Earth. The global spread of eleciric lights, combined with the round-the-clock nature of life and the launch of thousands of satellites, has rapidly “lightened” our world. Light pollution has increased so dramatically that, within a single generation, approximately half of the stars in the night sky visible to the unaided eye will disappear from view. This loss of darkness is having significant impacts on nearly all living things, including human health, animal behavior, and cultural and spiritual practices. Yet, to date, existing domestic and international laws have Jailed to address this urgent issue. In this paper, we propose new strategies that use domestic legal mechanisms, supported by international law, to protect the darkness. By combining the fields of law and astronomy, we outline three legal approaches to protect the night sky, each based on the concept of righs: individual rights, community rights, and rights of Nature. These approaches differ from those commonly used, particularly in the United States, but we argue they may provide better opportunities for communities to address the increasingly harmful amount of light pollution brightening the darkness.

Standing in the edge of a small irregularly shaped field/pasture. Snow underfoot and ahead 20-30cm / a foot or less deep with occasional bits of grass, weed, saplings poking through and random sets of animal tracks going here and there. To the left open mixed woods with mostly poplar in front, mostly showing their own shadow, a bit of light from the sun off to the right lighting one side. the forest floor is striped with their blue snowy shadows. Farther ahead across another arm of the field, is another strip of mixed woods, mostly spruce in near silhouette. The sun hangs like a great golden white blob to the right just above these trees with light artifacts from the camera lens scattering over the trees below like faint small round rainbows and casts long shadows over the snowy field.. The sky away from the sun is blue. The image has a dull gold frame like folded ribbon and the text Blessed Solstice in an almost script font, a brighter version of the frame colour appears in bottom left.
