Happy #CanadaDay. I figured, it might be fun to share this #CanadaLand episode where one of the McKenzie brothers explains the role #CanCon played in helping #Canada get a reputation of saying "eh?" David Thomas does a great job explaining the history of #SCTV — funny how culture comes into being. Welcome to the Great White North!

Translation:
Manifesto
I don't sing for the love of singing,
or because I have a good voice.
I sing because my guitar
has both feeling and reason.
It has a heart of earth
and the wings of a dove,
it is like holy water,
blessing joy and grief.
My song has found a purpose
as Violeta* would say.
Hardworking guitar,
with a smell of spring.
My guitar is not for the rich
no, nothing like that.
My song is of the ladder
we are building to reach the stars.
For a song has meaning
when it beats in the veins
of a man who will die singing,
truthfully singing his songs.
My song is not for fleeting praise
nor to gain foreign fame,
it is for this narrow country**
to the very depth of the earth.
There, where everything comes to rest
and where everything begins,
song which has been brave song
will be forever new.

North of North has dropped on Netflix today.
It’s an absolute joy of a show that looks misogyny, settler paternalism and intergenerational trauma directly in the eye but still leaves one feeling delighted, cheering on Siaja’s journey as a young ‘modern Inuk woman’ episode by episode.
A CBC-ATPN coproduction with Netflix, it ran weekly on CBC Gem earlier this year in Canada.
It deserves all the viewing minutes globally.
Starting a rewatch is what I needed this week.
Sharing and discussing Canadian music with a friend and they just said:
"Now that I think about it aren’t most Canadian bands led by nerds?"
Yuuuuup!
That was disturbingly well spotted.

@NFB reminding Canadians that they are a free streaming option by us and for us.
It’s the Ides of March! Beware, already! Here it js, in all its glory. Wayne and Shuster’s « classic » masterpiece, Rinse the Blood Off My Toga. Who killed Big Julie? Flavius Maximus, private Roman eye, is on the case. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxVWTH4ljEs #IdesofMarch #CanCon #JuliusCaesar #CBC
Seriously I need other people to watch North of North (APTN/CBC) with me so we can all agree that Jeffrey is the GOAT. #NorthOfNorth #CanCon
Also the same melody as "Oh how the money rolls in", a chorus that would fit these lyrics quite nicely.

Currently waiting to see if I’ll get a third player for the 2nd #RuneQuest game at #CanCon … I won’t run with less than that.

Moving along, in 2025, I'll tackle a new, weekly #OSE game (#TheHallsOfArdenVul), as well as continuing campaigns of OSE, #CallOfCthulhu, #DCCRPG, #DnD5e, #TheOneRing, and #TravellerRPG from 2024. And at the very least, I'll get to play in person at #CanCon, if not other cons and game days (possible now because I've finally settled down in a city). In all likelihood, I'll probably finally catch COVID, but that's the price of assembling in crowds these days, I guess.

I created a Starter Pack of #canCon to follow https://fedidevs.com/s/MTEy/ @chris Note that many excellent accounts have "discoverability" turned off so they cannot be included in such a list. At present its kind of green / lefty (and has a lot of Ontario content), if the Hub joins the fediverse let me know!
Good show, band had great energy still and funny ascerbic banter from the stage. Here's a bad picture. #CanCon

I get a real kick out of the predictable “Oh Noes the NDP are going to “force” an election — [that is literally scheduled by law to be no later than next fall] — and let the Conservatives win!”.
Canadian Politics Newsflash: There have only ever been Conservative or Liberal-led governments federally in Canada.
It would be illogical (and, may I submit, poor practice) to assume a Liberal government will hold power indefinitely.
The only way to stop that cycle is by voting differently.
