General Motors is implementing groundbreaking new battery tech that not only has 30 percent more energy density at the existing production cost for cells, but would also circumvent China's stranglehold on intellectual property for EV batteries. Another potential use for sodium ion battery tech is in grid-scale storage systems, like those mentioned here;

I have no idea what chemicals are currently used when building such systems. But if they're lithium ion they'll be stupidly expensive to build, and if they're lead acid - which seems more likely - they'll need replacing much sooner.

RNZ · Construction capacity can't keep up with 'phenomenal' demand for solar powerBy Eloise Gibson

A year ago I posted about some folks I know with an off-grid system powered by a water wheel and solar panels, who were awaiting delivery of some of the first commercially available sodium ion batteries. Well, they've had them in for a year now and they're totally sold on them. Although the real test will be how they're performing in 5-10 years time.

Blimey - according to thedriven.io/2024/01/25/worlds the world's largest battery manufacturer, China's CATL will be halving the price of its Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries this year. "This means the price of an average 60 kWh battery pack will have dropped from $US6,776.00 to just $3,388.00 in just 12 months, saving EV manufacturers over $3,000 per vehicle."

Our #BEV (MG4 Excite) has a 51kWh pack... So we could replace a future (post 7yr warranty) failed pack for well under US$3k... #BatteryTech
