I can see the ability to use other messaging apps to communicate with users within the EU (thanks to the ) is going to become popular quickly, once and others have finished implementing it…

@1br0wn @alderik From what I have gathered, WhatsApp is being so anal about the #DMA that I would not bet on that interoperability working anytime soon.

@1br0wn @alderik For one thing, each Homeserver would need to sign a separate contract with them. So even if *:matrix.org addresses could DM WhatsApp users, I, using a different Homeserver could not. And we are only talking about direct messages, group chats would not work anyway because they are not mandated. Ahh, and it would only work for people living in the EU, because WhatsApp can ignore the rest of the world.

@spaetz @1br0wn @alderik Your first and third points are indeed problematic and the EC should challenge them. Limited group support does come though in the second and third stages of Art. 7, 2 and 4 years after designation

@spaetz @1br0wn @alderik A big problem is the EC has been against Art. 7 all along. It’s only in the because the EuroParl fought so hard for it. So I don’t think the EC really cares if WA suffocates it 🤷‍♂️
