What a busy day! I’ve made two loaves of bread and two dozen muffins (cherry-lime & lemon blueberry) while @myerman planted corn (first part of the three sisters!), tomatoes, arugula, herbs, a black currant and a blueberry bush, as well as carrots, amaranth, sunflowers, perennials and annuals. We’re both exhausted, but I’m so happy to see progress on our mini #foodforest and toward #foodsovereignty. #resist
Moving some #WildStrawberries to a shadier spot (next to a small patch of raspberries). I'll be moving mint and sweet woodruff to the spot as well. Reclaiming the spot from an old woodpile and some invasive vines!

"The moniker "wild strawberry," sometimes also "alpine strawberry" or "wood strawberry," encompasses a bunch of varieties. Fragraria virginiana and Fragraria vesca are the most commonly available and are native to the continental United States, as is the less frequently grown beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis). Popular Fragraria vesca cultivars include Alexandra (also "Alexandria"), Semperflorens, Alpine, Baron Solemacher, and Ruegen, and there's also a French-developed wild strawberry called Fragaria Mara des Bois. No matter the cultivar, you can expect to see small, soft, bright pink, deep red, or cream-hued berries between May and July. Sometimes, if you're lucky and conditions are right, they fruit again in the fall! In the wild, these plants grow almost anywhere, from dry sites to damp, full sun to shade, usually at the border of forests or in clearings and meadows."

Went out tonight with a guerrilla arborist and planted pawpaw seeds along various waterways!
Pawpaws are a local native deciduous fruit bearing tree. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asimina_triloba) Not to be confused with papaya (also called pawpaws by some). These are green skinned fruits with yellow fruit inside. They taste kind of like sweet sticky melons with a hint of avocado? They taste amazing.
Their seeds are quite large and they require a period of freezing over winter so they'll germinate in spring.
This guerrilla arborist harvested seeds from last year, put them in a baggy with some sawdust and a little bit of water and chilled them in the fridge over the winter. We planted them today.
They'll sprout in about six months and start producing fruit in about six years.
I intend to harvest a lot of seeds this year and begin planting in earnest next year.
We're building out the local food forests.
Folks should eat for free.

I recently attended a workshop by Permaculture Institute of North America about starting nurseries. Among all the facilitators, these books were most recommended. A bit hard to find used though. I guess people keep them.

"The petition to save our forest garden has gathered over 7,500 signatures in two days which is AMAZING.
"I think our landlords DHT may have been surprised and shocked both by the level of support and by the passion shown, so thank you all again.
"Before we went public, we did in fact write to CEO Robert Fedder at DHT a week ago, explaining why the forest garden was such an important resource, and asking them to retract their notice to quit. We also told him that there would be considerable public support and inevitable bad PR for them. Clearly DHT didn’t want a sensible dialogue at that time ….
"Our focus now is persuading DHT to sell the forest garden site to us. We know there are supporters out there itching to get crowdfunding so anyone with good experience of this please get in touch – we may need you!
"We heard a report that someone shouted abuse at Dartington staff yesterday. Please don’t. DHT front line staff are not responsible for DHT decisions.

I needed to take a break from the doom and gloom, so I eyed spots in the yard for more wildflowers, a mini food forest, and a spot for three sisters (and sunflowers). I had good luck growing some beans in hanging pots, so I'll be doing that again, as well as growing greens, onions, sun gold tomatoes and red potatoes in containers. Attempting beets again, but the local critters like them a little too much.
