Astro Hawk (Ian Kluft) ✅🚀🛰️<p>A year ago on the return trip from <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/SolarEclipse2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarEclipse2024</span></a>, I stopped at Arizona's Meteor Crater. It's officially Barringer Crater, after the man who first proposed it might be an impact crater, tried to understand its geology, but died before he could prove it. Later it became the first proven impact site after geologist Eugene Shoemaker noticed its geology was like Nevada's nuclear test blast craters, but vastly bigger. <a href="https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112265956358306922" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112265</span><span class="invisible">956358306922</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/geology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geology</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/space" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>space</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/spacegeek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spacegeek</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>travel</span></a></p>

The crater is 8mi/13km wide and US Hwy 385 goes through the middle of it. But the highway is the only spot you can see it since the rest of the crater is private property. So it was easy to keep the stop quick, take a few pictures and continue the drive. <a href="https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112258742599256023" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112258</span><span class="invisible">742599256023</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/geology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geology</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/space" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>space</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/spacegeek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spacegeek</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>travel</span></a></p>

From the far point of the trip in Houston, I made some more <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/space" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>space</span></a> related stops on the way home: Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton TX, NSF's Very Large Array radiotelescope near Socorro NM and Meteor Crater near Flagstaff AZ. Astro Hawk (Ian Kluft) ✅🚀🛰️<p>One year ago, April 10, 2024... 2 days after <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/SolarEclipse2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarEclipse2024</span></a>, I visited NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. That part of my itinerary was intended to be an easy success in case the weather turned the eclipse viewing into a failure. Fortunately, that succeeded too. <a href="https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112252673054720555" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112252</span><span class="invisible">673054720555</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/NASA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NASA</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/space" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>space</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/spacegeek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spacegeek</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>travel</span></a></p>
Astro Hawk (Ian Kluft) ✅🚀🛰️<p>One year ago, the day after the April 8, 2024 total <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/SolarEclipse2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarEclipse2024</span></a>, I continued south from Dallas to Houston to see NASA Johnson Space Center, with a quick peek before the visitor center closed for the day. I returned for more there the next day. That day was the road trip's farthest point with dinner at the coast in Galveston. After that everything was on the journey back home. <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/spacegeek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spacegeek</span></a> <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>travel</span></a></p>

One year ago... #weather is what you get. Forecasted storms were late, cleared just enough just in time to see #SolarEclipse2024 totality in Mesquite TX. Since cumulus clouds grow with daytime solar heating, the partial eclipse leading up to totality apparently cooled the air enough to inhibit them. Not everyone was as lucky that day. Spring is unpredictable - actual cloud cover along the path of totality differed from average expectations. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112237 #eclipse #astronomy #travel

One year ago was the day before the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024. I got to Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro) around mid-day to try to arrive ahead of the crush of traffic as everyone came from everywhere to the path of totality. Even before I found a place to get lunch, I met a news crew preparing to cover the next day's festivities in downtown. I was interviewed by AP aerospace reporter Marcia Dunn. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112231 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel

A year ago I was on the way to see the Total #SolarEclipse2024. With snowfall expected to close I-84 in eastern Oregon's Blue Mountains, I had to leave a day early on the road trip to stay ahead of it. The snow followed just behind me until the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico where the storm weakened enough that a slightly late 9:30am departure allowed the sun to melt snow & ice on the pass on I-40. Overnight stops were in Boise ID, Price UT, Albuquerque NM and Wichita Falls TX. #astronomy #travel

I learned more about interaction of cloud cover and lowering temperature in an eclipse. Cumulus clouds that form from rising air lose energy and may clear in an eclipse, as happened in Mesquite TX for me in #SolarEclipse2024.
Mountains can cause stratus to form or worsen in eclipses. Clouds formed in both annular eclipses I attempted. In Reno NV 2012, Sierra Nevada mountain wave cloud formed. In 2023 north of Roseburg OR, it was overcast and then fog formed at the center. #astronomy #weather
