The Otago Regional Council is switching from from first past the post, to STV (single transferable vote) for this year’s council elections. This aligns with the DCC system which has been working well for years.

Prof Janine Hayward has some good advice.

"After first past the post (FPP), there was a tendency among some people to rank every single candidate on the ballot sheet, but really that’s unnecessary."

⬆️ Yep. That was me, ranking climate deniers at number 40-something then being required to rank every other candidate in between.

"Put simply, if you don’t like the candidate, don’t rank them."

Amen.

One of the 1 of 200 hosts asks Marx whether Canada has considered MMP. Apparently they have, but the liberals and conservatives keep blocking it.

I recommend citizens who want proportional representation in their countries campaign for STV, not MMP. I say that having voted in elections using both MMP (NZ general elections since 1996) and STV (some local body elections).

Excuse the pettiness, I should probably just be grateful they're shown on terrestrial TV, but I find it interesting/typical that #STV is showing the England games, but it isn't showing the #Scotland games. I can understand England not showing the Scotland games on ITV1, but isn't STV meant to be Scotland's channel?

Not only was the Scotland v Poland game relegated to ITV4, the programme including commentary was 2 hours 20 mins.

Today's England game is on STV and is on 3 hours and 15 mins.

Looks like election night on #STV will be the UK network coverage rather than a fully local #Scottish version. End of an era. No more results with #BernardPonsonby or #BrianTaylor down to his braces on #BBCScotland. It'll be different for sure. Think the #Channel4 lineup sounds like fun.

I have to say this is my new number one favorite explainer video about Proportional Representation and Single Transferable Voting:

(my previous go-to video was by the inimitable CGP Grey, and it's still great if you want more details about the mechanics of STV: youtube.com/watch?v=l8XOZJkozf)
