The EU is about to finalise new rules for general purpose AI like ChatGPT. But instead of reining in leading AI providers such as Microsoft or Meta, Big Tech got privileged access to the development of the rules.
Our latest research with @corporateeurope shows how Big Tech used its privileged access to influence the new rules (the so-called "Code of Practice" in the AI Act). /1
The process was lopsided from the start.
Tech companies have had much more influence than civil society.
Consulting firms working for Big Tech at the same time were hired for the development of the rules.
This privileged access for Big Tech is unacceptable. It strengthens their already existing monopoly power and prevents rules that are in the public interest. The EU must strengthen AI regulation and take decisive action against the power of tech monopolies. /2
