They are not asking for a lot of personal data. Your identity and your address. Basically any website ask you for more when you order something online, like a phone number or an email, which is not the care here.

They need to verify the identities to avoid having 3 million signatures from "John Doe". This is an official process that could influence the politics of the EU, so they must check who is signing.
A bit like when you vote, your identity is checked so you cannot vote twice.
I find it a bit sad to refuse participative democracy because of this reason. This is the opportunity to be heard out of national votes, with the same personal data involved.
