I'm not sure if there is a high concentration of accounts on any single #XMPP server today, as it were once with Google. There is probably a high concentration of XMPP servers at @hetzner DCs, though.
If we talk about "#European Alternatives" (see OP) the most relevant point is the #digitalSovereignty aspect @martin mentioned. Signal runs and depends entirely on AWS and Google and is therefore completely out.
Yes, metadata could be reduced in #xmpp but at least there is no single instance which gathers all the metadata like for centralized messengers
A well-designed centralised messenger such as Signal does not have access to most of the metadata that XMPP has.
Also the ability to run your own server helps to reduce the amount of metadata stored on strangers servers and increases digital sovereignty
This is quite misleading. The problem is that a lot of the metadata is visible to more than one server. Being able to run your own server doesn't help if someone else's server impacts your privacy. When Google Talk came along, they were hosting more than 50% of my contacts, so saw almost a huge amount of my metadata. Even though I was running my own server, Google saw more metadata from me than Signal sees with a centralised service.
can someone explain to me how OMEMO is supposed to work?
on Dino, for old messages sent on a different device, i get "You received a message encrypted with OMEMO but your client doesn't support OMEMO." but my client does support OMEMO - i can send and receive new messages just fine.
i've been using unencrypted for a while as a result, but i'd rather not do that if possible.

@rantanlan huh? #XMPP ist doch nicht tot - es riecht noch nicht einmal seltsam. Spaß beiseite: ich kann es insbesondere für #selfhosting in Kombination mit #conversations nur empfehlen.

Ich habe immer noch keine vernünftige Lösung bzgl. #selfhosting #messaging
#XMPP schien damals gut, ist aber scheinbar nahezu tot. #Matrix geht auch in eine Richtung, die mir nicht gefällt, und ist mir zu komplex für meinen Usecase.
Vermutlich ist #Deltachat noch am nächsten dran, auch wenn mir der Webclient abgeht. Dafür ist es simpel und braucht als Infrastruktur ohnehin nur den vorhandenen Mailserver.
Alternativ Signal? Nervt aber ebenfalls weil es die Historie nur lokal hält und das Backup auf dem Device liegt und auch keinen Webclient bietet... alles nicht so einfach.
