Yvonne Perkins
Tonight a passenger walking from the tram stop at Parliament station to the stationary tram had a very close shave with a car that drove through the stop - illegal when a tram is stationary and with its doors open. The car driver did not stop.

I was on that tram but did not witness the incident because I was sitting on the opposite side. But it was wonderful seeing how the passengers who witnessed the incident responded. They checked that the woman was OK - she said that she was. The tram driver also checked via the intercom. The woman said she was ok.

The tram moved to the next stop and there was the car stopped at the red lights. About 8 passengers who witnessed the incident got off the tram with the woman. The woman spoke to the car driver about the incident - calmly and clearly. The tram driver waited. The passengers and woman got back aboard. Then the passengers checked in again with the woman to see if she was OK. They urged her to record the licence plate of the car - another passenger had recorded it and made sure she recorded it correctly.

The response of the passengers was fantastic. They did not know each other but cared for a stranger. The woman thanked the passengers.

The incident should never have happened. If you drive in Melbourne you MUST STOP if a tram is stationary with the doors open. If in doubt, STOP. The law is there for a reason. If you don't stop you could kill someone.

#Melbourne #Trams #PublicTransport ping @danielbowen
