Today's historic photo of the day: 38 years ago today, C504 hauls a broad gauge Melbourne to Adelaide 'Jet' express goods #train at Rockbank, Vic, May 30 1987.

Rockbank is 30km west of Melbourne on Victoria's main Western broad gauge line to Ballarat, Ararat, Horsham and Adelaide. This line saw heavy passenger and goods traffic despite being single track.

Signals protecting the crossing loop had been upgraded from semaphores to colour lights but were mounted on the old semaphore bracket post.

I used to post commentary on fb when going on long #train journeys, but since I don’t use fb anymore, I’ll be posting here today!

My original end destination was Den Haag, but I’m now staying with friends in Dordrecht, so when I get further south I’ll decide whether I’ll head to Den Haag first, or get off a bit earlier to divert :)

Expect snark, commentary on delays and silly happenings, a picture of Die Elbe and just general musings while traveling 12+ hours on now 5(+?) different trains :)

Today's historic photo of the day: 37 years ago today, ME class diesel loco no 1537 heads a DSB passenger #train away from Central Station, Copenhagen, Denmark, May 29 1988.

DSB (Danske Statsbaner or Danish State Railways), the largest railway company in Scandinavia, provides long distance and commuter rail services in Denmark. Unlike most other European railways, many of its routes are not electrified, so DSB relies significantly on diesel traction such as that seen here.

I'm in Kraków! First time in nine years; that long absence feels a bit strange, considering I used to come here all the time for Lonely Planet.

The seven hour train trip from Berlin seemed to flash by. I think that's partly because I somehow received a first class reservation without a seat number, so had to keep changing seats as new people got on board. Interesting bunch, I talked to people from Finland, USA, Brazil, Germany, and Poland.

The train is finally starting to empty out; we've just reached Gliwice and there's no one left in this compartment but me. This is what first class seating on a Polish train looks like, btw. I love compartment seating, nice to see it still survives in some places.

Over halfway through my train journey from Berlin to Kraków, just passed through Wrocław. There's a big football match in Wrocław tonight between Chelsea and Real Betis, so loads of passengers got off there.

Still pretty crowded onboard. I've given up on the dining car for the moment. Slammed!

💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 🚂🌿 Train enthusiasts, ferroequinologists, and brick nerds will love this 15-minute #LEGO cargo train ride through a garden. The #construction #video follows a cargo #train delivering cable drums through pipe tunnels and zig-zagging tracks.

Watch from alongside the tracks and with POV footage as the train passes Minifigs waiting at stations, flashing lights, and weeds that tower over the train like a forest.
