‘We can’t say we didn’t know’: Israeli #academics demand end to war on #Gaza

Unlike other domestic letters protesting against Israel’s war on Gaza, the academics’ letter centres on the #suffering of Palestinians. More than 1,200 Israeli academics have issued an open letter calling on the heads of Israeli academic institutions to “speak out” and act to stop the war on Gaza.

In the letter released on Tuesday, the academics, who identify themselves as the Black Flag Action Group, claim that, since #Israel violated the #ceasefire in March, almost 3,000 people have been killed in Gaza. The vast majority of them, the writers say, were civilians. In addition to the growing numbers of people killed by Israeli fire, the authors note, are the warnings of acute starvation being forced upon Gaza as a “result of intentional and openly declared Israeli government policy”.

Stories about people who became "productive members of society" because welfare systems kept their families afloat are great. However, I don't care if a person spends their whole life on welfare. I don't care if they never have a "legitimate job." I just want people housed, fed, and not suffering more than the natural course of life causes suffering to us all. We have the resources for everyone to be fine.

So the first noble truth, simply put, is that clinging is suffering. It’s because of clinging...

... that physical pain becomes mental pain. It’s because of clinging that aging, illness, and death cause mental distress.
The paradox here is that, in clinging to things, we don’t trap them or get them under our control. Instead, we trap ourselves. When we realize our captivity, we naturally search for a way out.
And this is where it’s so important that the first noble truth not say that “Life is suffering.” If life were suffering, where would we look for an end to suffering? We’d be left with nothing but death and annihilation.
But when the actual truth is that clinging is suffering, we simply have to look for the clinging and eliminate its causes. This process takes time, though, because we can’t simply tell the mind not to cling.
It’s like a disobedient child: if you force it to let go while you’re looking, it’ll search for a blind spot where you can’t see it, and will start to cling there.
In fact, the mind’s major blind spot—ignorance—is the prime cause that gives rise to clinging’s proximate cause: craving.
