10+ years later and a blog post essentially not recommending ECC RAM for servers stills makes my blood boil. Without ECC you are blindly gambling on the integrity of your data. Use ECC + Post Package Repair (PPR) + ADDDC if you care about your data. #ECC #Servers

"Before you can ask an #AI model to help you [...], the model is born in a #data center. Racks of #servers hum along for months, ingesting #training data, crunching numbers, and performing #computations. [...] It’s only after this #training, when #consumers or #customers “inference” the AI models to get answers or generate outputs, that model makers hope to [...] eventually turn a #profit .[...]
80–90% of computing power for AI is used for inference."

@darkuncle the “building a complier” line tells me the author isn’t an SE, programmer or someone who hacks. They also missed an important point: “when you're writing software that only has to run on your own servers, you can use any language you want.” — pg.

I’ll bet Jane Street use their own #servers.

Given the state of the U.S. /weary/ I need to prioritize some long-delayed things. I've asked this before and dug around, but couldn't find any confirmation/denial. I don't know what country my server (Mas.to) @trumpet is based in. I think it'd be best for me to be on a server hosted elsewhere if it's not.

If you can help with info on my server or a safer alternative, please let me know.

hey selfhosting photographer people of the internet, question for you!

I want to selfhost some sort of photo sharing app with really granular permissions

I want to share my photos, preferably in one place. I think (looking for input!) that I would be able to sort of "tag" an image with permissions. For example "public" or "friends" and/or "family"

Anyone.. know of something for that?
Piwigo, Lychee and Chevereto might be options.

The #AI Boom Is Draining #Water From the Areas That Need It Most
A Bloomberg News analysis finds that roughly two thirds of new #datacenters built or in development in the #US since 2022 are in places with high levels of water stress.
The data centers that power #artificialintelligence consume immense amounts of water to cool hot #servers and, indirectly, from the #electricity needed to run these facilities.

#Apple Is Developing Specialized Chips for Glasses, New Macs and #AI #Servers
The project, dubbed #Baltra, is planned to be completed by 2027. As part of the effort, Apple is considering different types of chips, including ones that have double, quadruple or eight times the number of main processing and graphics cores as today’s #M3Ultra. bloomberg.com/news/articles/20
