@ChrisMayLA6 @sjwrenlewis Really? The supposed "U-turn" on #disability #benefits is just a tactical retreat until Timms delivers his Review, & the cut to the health element of UC is going ahead. Furthermore, the Govt. plan to cut the legal entitlement of #disabled #children to #SEND #education. Starmer has reiterated his opposition to a #wealth tax. There's plenty of money for nuclear warheads, though!

It's a whimsical notion on my part, I know, but wouldn't it be nice if this Labour government took a week off from its chosen mission of fellating plutocrats and chasing the bigot vote and — just for a week, mind you, let's not ask for the world — not spend its time kicking down to send one or other disadvantaged group into a spiral of months of panic and despair to save a few bob that will be spent on tax perks for the rich and nuclear toys that Mr Trump won't let us play with.

The Guardian · After disability benefits, is Labour really about to target the educational rights of special needs children?By John Harris

After the summer recess, Keir Starmer is set to try to change the criteria for special education needs & disabilities (SEND) in schools. While the intent is also to push SEND provision back into mainstream & specialist state schools (reversing the expansion of private provision), the key issue will be shifts in eligibility for support.

We will find out whether the logic of the change can be presented as a positive improvement or becomes (again) a case of saving money.

The only thing keeping many councils from insolvency is a bit of accounting trickery called a statutory override, now extended to April 2028, which allows deficits related to services for special educational needs & disabilities (SEND), including loans to cover such defects, to be excluded from councils' accounts (off the books).

In the real word not their fantasy accounts this is also draining Councils' reserves. Another can kicked down the road!

The Guardian · Councils face millions in extra Send costs as overhaul delayedBy Richard Adams

@alexadeswift You are most definitely not alone. The #Bristol #Send lobby is huge and has been causing major headaches for the local authority for years.

I'm wondering if this is another of those horrific ideas politicians like coming out with the put the frighteners on people only to withdraw them in the face of opposition.

Looks like the Labour government is going to scrap EHCPs for children with special needs.

The reason? Too many children have special needs requiring support. Too many parents are winning tribunals to ensure their children receive support. Rather than full-scale overhaul of an education system that is not fit for use for most children, Labour is continuing to demonstrate its Tory credential and just cut cut cut. Outrageous.
