The OG <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/CrystalCaves" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CrystalCaves</span></a> did this cleverly: being limited to the EGA palette, they did a palette swap, changing lights to darks and darks to blacks, resulting in this atmospheric cave-like effect that is quite effective.
